The mysterious and elusive HMS Astute model
« on: March 01, 2014, 01:12:44 pm »

Well, as supposed stockist of the new RC Astute model, I can advise that Fratton Model Centre have not had stock this day, the first of March 2014, of the above model. We also have no idea of trade prices, technical spec, customer support, availability etc. We have also not agreed at any time to sell the above model. But I feel sure the Submarine Museum in Gosport have had theirs.
Will keep you all notified :-))

This is very disapointing, no sign of it yet, and it was due on the 1st of March too. I was hoping for a test sail down the lake tomorrow, still hoping though {:-{

Well, there you go, release date no doubt pushed back again. however I believe you can keep track on 'Friend Face' for the latest updates, fawning, sycophantic support from a bunch of know nothings, and general hollow promises. Ahh, the wonders of modern technology, all that on-line presence and nothing to show for it <:(

Why would anyone want to purchase his models, assuming there are some to purchase?

Highly dubious business practices aside, the pattern making is downright ropey. If it's for your own amusement, then crack on, but when it's for sale at £300 a pop then it needs to be good, very good in fact.

Yes, it has all looked a bit odd.
And if it looks odd, it is odd.

ive been fishing around on his fb page at lunch time , his claims of the only current supplier being britishforces models , suprisingly enough an email to them has resulted in a big fat nothing ! , my conversation with astute has been deleted when i started asking questions !

just received an email from the supplier of said "kit " , british forces models .  its retailing at £" 994. 95 , but you will still need to supply radio , 2x 25 amp escs plus a 12v 7 ah gel battery , the claim is they are being built to order  and they can produce five per week ! , personally i think my dog knows more about radio control than astute models .

Why is it times heople on here are fast enough to slate small companies but never big companies.  If you all think you can do a better job put your hand in your own pockets and do so. As far as I am aware no one on here has seen the model. Do you gripe whinge snd moan when a larger company doesnt release something on time? No. Give the bloke a chance. I know for a fact he hasnt been well for a couple of week's. Who cares if hes a week or s month late?  Has anyone pre ordered,  because if you had then you are the only ones allowed to moan.
how many times have we all ordered something only to find its not in stock. If you are a shop trying to sell the product then you should know that all suppliers have problems. As opposed to those eho have said they have tried to contact him I have tonight and had a chat with him. No problems this end!
Do stop flaming the thread its not needed and not helpful.

youve  obviously been sucked in too klunk ?   mysterious the model certainly is , it has been going to be released to the public for sale on more than one occasion to my knowledge , surley if you were going to introduce a fantastic new model you would be showing off the product to anyone and everyone ? astute couldnt answer my questions , but instead directed me to another of his listed suppliers , who at nine pm last night updated his website , with a small picture and a price tag. im sure when im asked questions about my model at the lakeside im able to answer , just the same as im able to answer questions about the classic british car i drive , this man knows nothing about the working side of the model hes hoping to sell .

Pretty much all of the outlets for model submarine items are small, cottage industry, usually one or two man operations, so no one is attacking the 'little guy' here.

If the chap comes along and says here is a model I have built and I'm interested in marketing it as a kit for sale and proceed to explain how it works, plenty of pictures and perhaps show a video of it working. Don't think anyone will get any grief for that, do you?

The problems are centred around the rhetoric, hyperbole and the attempted use of credibility by association.

I have been reading this thread and all the other threads/posts/ websites regarding this model as I was interested in getting one.
I am all in favour of helping the small traders and getting proper service, even more so if they wish to give there profits to deserving charities

HOWEVER in my opinion the guys full of it.......
He announced that he had successfully built the submarine and sailed it early last year but couldn't give me basic details, I was referred to his website (if I want pictures of the real Astute I will either google them or go to faslane and get my own),
he had then put a kit on Ebay with money to charity but couldn't give pictures of the model just pictures of the real thing (I emailed no proper response) never did find out if the winning bidder received their model......
Pictures and descriptions on his facebook of his "top secret" own design control units are suspect (hint: you need an input and output for things to work not just an input)
the basic model he said had been inspected by fellow WELL KNOWN model submarine manufacturers (who couldn't be named) and they
were in the opinion the basic model was worth thousands (I have an OTW S Class and Sheerline Trafalgar and it doesn't compare and know the price of those)
he keeps referring to his 1:20th scale model Astute as being built next.....HOLD ON....he said last year it was already built and operational, with firing torpedo's the works!
He keeps posting things then removing them or cannot back up his claims on his facebook

Perhaps IF this person was truly genuine he would know to have a model on the market you get it working first then
issue it for release but he makes big announcements and never follows through, yes as Klunk rightly points out things happen
and sometimes things get delayed but it was meant to be on the market last year then was delayed if you check it on here it was to be launched January 13, then it was delayed again and again, to delay a kit for over a year and keep changing your story is worrying to someone your expecting to pay big bucks for your product and have no real working pictures of it is not a good way to sell your product

......... As well as delays, will the kit be subject to massive cost over-runs as well ???

OK. Fine. This guy has yet to produce credible evidence of product. Some of you are frustrated by his poor salesmanship. Fine.

Has he taken anyone's money yet?

This (and other sites) thread is getting ugly; a bit of group-think and pile-on; you're all one step away from behaving like a lynch-mob. An easy thing to do on the Internet -- as we are not immediately subject to the punch-in-the-nose a face-to-face confrontation affords the participants.

Now, if this guy has taken money and failed to deliver the goods, then, by all means, I'll pick up my torch and pitch-fork and I'll join you as we storm the wind-mill.

Has this guy hurt anyone yet? If not, why do you care?

A scam is still a scam even if it is boat related.

Those who readily leap to the defence, claiming flaming the issue,  leave the small guy alone, etc etc etc, are aiding and abetting scams/bad practices.

Remember the saying, If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, looks like a duck, well what do you know it is a duck.

Let the buyer beware it is up to you do to do your own due diligence.

Can you prove that there is a scam in progress? Or, is the 'duck' analogy all you've got?
