Mayhem Film Club....
« on: June 28, 2007, 02:39:49 am »

Hi All

I was asked a question the other day by a friend of mine. To list my Top 5 favorite Movies of all time and genre, I sat down and thought it very hard to narrow it down to just five. So I put this to the forum.

List your top Five Movies of all time (in order)?????????

Ohh Mine
1 Zulu
2 Holcroft Covenant
3 Uncle Buck
4 Battle of Britain
5 Shawshank Redemption

My criteria to sort out all the movies into the top 5 was the movies I really like so much so that I can watch them any time and many times each time seams like the first.

See how you go.

Best Comedy: As Good as it Gets, Jack Nickolson at his best

Best War: Saving Private Ryan, everyone should be made to watch it

Best Thriller: Sixth Sense, nobody knew what was coming at the end.

Best Science Fiction: All Star Wars Movies

Best Musical: Chicago, really good music and Catherine Zeta Jones in stockings

They top my trees.

Hi All

It is hard to pin it down to just five. That is why I thought I would ask the forum. I have thought of others since, that on another day might just sneak in, but I am sticking to my 5.

Very difficult to list just five, but here goes....

1 Cabaret.

I infuriate my Wife by singing along with all the songs, including the ones in German, while giving the salute during that classic scene in the Biergarten. Also, it features Liza Minelli in black stockings and suspenders....

2 Amelie.

One of the cleverest and most charming films ever made, some bare breasts, but a vicar could watch it.

3 Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources.

A slight cheat, but the two can't really be separated, and I'd happily pay to watch Gerard Depardieu mowing his lawn.

4 The Last American Hero.

Beau Bridges best film, also for me the only realistic and believable film on motor racing ever made.

5 Babette's Feast.

Possibly because I'm part Danish, but a great Oscar-winning film anyway.

It pained me a little to leave out favourites like The Blues Brothers and two John Wayne classics, The Searchers and They were Expendable, and also of course Martin's favorite Das Boot. Also My Cousin Vinny, The Train and Nikita, but if I'm asked again next week, the list will probably have changed. I could easily come up with my top five for French or German language films as well, Delicatessen very nearly made it into the top five.

If we were voting for favourite film scenes though, what could top the bit where Kristin Scott Thomas climbs slowly out of her bath in The English Patient ?

Schindlers List
I think they should make this film part of history lessons, the only time I have sat in a full cinema that has been totaly quite

Zulu
The first film I was ever alowed out on my own to watch, still like watching it

Saving Private Ryan
Horrible to say, but it has some of the best battle scenes in it

Jurassic Park
Just Brilliant

ET
Classic

Just noticed most of mine are made by Spielberg.

1 Overboard  just to see Goldie Hawn half naked  corrr!

2 Goodnight Mr Tom  A weepy and John Thaw is just stunning

3 Hocus Pocus  Bette Midler Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy  LOL

4 Philadelphia the shear hard hitting fact of the times fantastic

5 bedknobs and Broomsticks some light relief

These are somethat I can watch over and over and still see something different each time but to be honest to get this list DOWN to only 5 was done by random grabbing at our film library in the various sections

Five!?

In no particular order...

Italian Job - ORIGINAL version!
Blackhawk Down - If ever you get any illusions that war is a viable foreign policy solution, watch this film.
Stargate - The movie from which SG1 sprouted.
633 Squadron - 'nuff said!
Twister - I've no idea why I like this film, but I do... So there! :P

Casablanca. and maybe then To have and to have not, just for "you know how to whistle, doncha Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."
And then any three of all the other films ever made because as plymouth used to say in the ads featuring Richard Petty "We'd like to thank the competition. For taking part."

1.) Italian Job (Original) I love Charlie Croker's script when they meet the mob in the mountains on the way to the job.

2.) Das Boot (Directors cut) When Mrs Mogsy goes out with the girls I'll stick this on with the lights out and all the windows open wearing a thick wooly sweater with my feet in a metal bath of iced water... but seriousley.... what an atmospheric film. Hats off to Wolfgang Petersen I say.

3.) Silent Running (1970 something). Stars Bruce Dern- Sc-fi Classic complete with Huey & Duey the robots and period soundtrack featuring Joan Baez.

4.) Twin Town (Dark humour set in Swansea) Flippin hysterical take on drug culture Vs.  bent coppers and local crime lord Bryn Cartwright. Starring Rhys Ifans, Llyr Evans and Dougray Scott. Written by Keith Allen's brother Kevin (Lilly's uncle) .......  If you've not seen this you are missing out on u.k black comedy's finest moment.

5.) Nuts In May (Mike Leigh Play) made yonks ago and featuring the excellent Alison Steadman as the hapless Candice Marie. A lively and witty glimpse of life under canvas where tolerence is stretched to it's limits. Filmed entirely in Dorset. Not really a film as a t.v play which I'd seen a s a teenager and wept for joy when I found in Virgin Cardiff one rainy Saturday afternoon.

I love film and might I helpfully suggest pepople check out and contribute their reviews to ' Internet Movie Database , that's on t'interweb somewhere - well worth a trwl throught o see what other peeps make of your personal favourites. Hang on ......................   here's a link   www.imdb.com

I use Internet Movie Database a lot just to answer movie questions.  I always end up having a browse, it really is a brilliant site.

Roman Holiday - Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck
Bringing up Baby - Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant
Star Wars
Princess Bride
The Incredibles

Did very much enjoy Lord of the Rings, Twin Towers and Return of the King.

Liked Michael Cain in the Italian Job... and  then
Peter O'Toole in "How to Steal a Million.
Cary Gant in Mr Blanding Builds his Dream House or Charade, or Arsenic and Old Lace, Father Goose,, Philadelphia Story, Topper... Aww heck, pretty much anything Cary Grant did...

Princess bride is absolute class (do I recall Peter Falk in the openeing sequence ???).
If I included childrens films then I would rank Toy Story II right up there. It's me and my som's favourite and one of those rare movies where a sequel exceeds an all ready brilliant original.

I only watched "The Worlds Fastest Indian" recently and really enjoyed it.  Mind you anything with Anthony Hopkins in it gets my vote.

1) Bladerunner , absolutely stunning Sci-Fi movie

2) Alien , the 1st one H.R.Geiger's violent introduction to the world ( he designed the Alien !!! )

3) Das Boot , probably the most true account of life in the U-Boat arm of the Kreigsmarine during WW2

4) 2001 , come on guys this movie set the benchmark for photo-realistic space shots that wasn't bettered until recently using CGI

5) Spinal Tap , a p1ss take on the Heavy Metal bands of the era ( based on Judas Priest ) which is just too close to the truth not to be funny lol

I loved all 3 Lord of the Rings films , loved the start of Saving Private Ryan BUT AHEM where were the Brits and Canadians ???
