Watched Men in Black last week. A couple of times I nodded off  {-)

Toy Story 4 in 3D tomorrow  O0
Saw MIB4 last week too - not impressed - lazy 'just for the money' script - like a poor man's Ragnorok.   Aussie guy failing to be English, English girl failing to be American.   Weak story.

I will NEVER see Toy Story 4 - 1 was clever, 2 was a masterpiece, 3 was unpleasant and (after reading the spoiler) 4 will just disappoint on sooooo many levels that I'd rather not see it.

I prefer to keep the magic of the second film and try to forget the third.

Just watched (yet again) The African Queen, kind of in parallel with the start of my Deans Marine HMS Mimi / Toutou build.   However the US movie has a completely different ending to C.S. Forester's original book.

The book describes the actual historical attack by two British 40ft launches of 19 kts mounting a 6 pounder gun forward and a Maxim gun aft.  The size of the gun meant it could only be fired forwards.
They successfully attacked the armed German ship Kingani in lake Tanganyika, damaging her to the point where she struck her colours.

Later the British fast launches attacked the German warship Hedwig von Wissmann and after a long chase eventually sunk her.

So why was the movie ending totally different ?  The saga of getting two forty foot launches across over 800 miles of African terrain to reach the lake was so awesome.

It appeared in my feed so I watched it on-line this morning with my daughter.     We didn't like it - the Benson dolls were almost as creepy as Chucky.    The characters had all been twisted around to make the plot work.    All very PC to stick in the throat.   Gabby Gabby suddenly became good?     Forky lost his deathwish?      Bo suddenly becomes Lara Croft?   I found the whole thing superficial and just unpleasant.    It reminded me of Bolt.

Just watched "The Hustle" - it's the female remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

If the original film was the Michael Caine character, smooth, clever & witty, the remake is the Steve Martin character - crass, loud and uncouth.

The remake is truly dreadful.    Hathaway cannot do comedy.    When Steve Martin was cleaned up in the film he became a smooth operator.   When Rebel Wilson was cleaned up, she's still a fat lump with no acting ability.

Do not waste your time with this.

On the other hand, "Welcome to Marwen" with Steve Carell is a magical little film about an artist living in a fantasy world and his interactions with the real-life local people in his town after being brain damaged from an assault.   10/10

You might not like this - the one joke wears very thin, very quickly.    Even the critics hated it.

Hi Bob

Probably because it didn’t match the romantically perceived story Hollywood created around the truth of the Battle of Lake Tanganyika or CS Forester’s idea of it.
If you’ve watched The Golden Compass, the ending doesn’t even come close to the book- probably because it was truly gruesome compared to the romantic ending Hollywood prefers.
If you think about the true story of Spicer and his men would actually be more interesting and probably funnier! If you’ve read The Phantom Flotilla, and Mimi and Toutou go Forth you’ll be in tears with some of the silliness!

Hi all, just come back from seeing 'Yesterday'.  Well I enjoyed it as did my wife, I would give it 8 out of 10.  I rarely agree with the critics as only personal taste and choice works for me.  The music is good and there are lots of aside jokes.  I love it when he is desperately trying to remember the lyrics of Beetles songs.

The plot is a Richard Curtis one it presses the right buttons, some scenes reprise scenes in other films, all good light stuff, when the lights go down, just suspend the real world and throw yourself in and enjoy it.

You will come out humming 'Hey Jude' and why not?

kind regards
Roy

Critics <*<  Who takes any notice of critics? If the critics hate a film it's an almost sure bet that I will love it, so I take absolutely no notice of them. Most of them should be charged with impersonating someone who actually knows anything about the entertainment value of films :}

Just my opinion, of course %)

Andy I am so jealous of your time or openess of going to the cinema so regularly.  You seem to have a very open, eclectic approach!!  I am quite decided what I want to watch beforehand -but I have such a strict criteria.

I am a film dinosaur -just watched "Charlie Wilson's war" which helps explain "Bitter Lake" a bit more now.

Menwhile I'm stil  Deprivedl livid I was deprived of "Holmes and Watson", it was pulled the day I went to buy tickets on the first showing for my theatre!  No stairway?-Deprived LoL.

Strangely I have recurring images and memories of this film. I think at the time you wonder where it is all leading to only to be disappointed  %%  The acting is as expected top notch from Brad Pit and Leonardo.
The film truly captured the era and was at times funny too  {-)

Our next film is Dora which seems something akin to Goonies of years ago
