Maiden voyage
« Reply #75 on: October 07, 2012, 09:40:04 am »

As anticipated and hoped Saturday came with no rain, so the planned maiden voyage took place.

I loaded Maggie and the puppy in the car and Mrs RJR and our youngest came along too

We met my dad (Duckie on here) at the Lake with his camera. he also provided the champaign for the launch !

Having established she wasn't about to sink to the bottom I cautiously cast off.

With a gentle motor hum from deep in the hull Maggie came to life and began to power herself away from the landing stage

Then with an increase of power she was off to join the ducks and geese across the lake

Handling was excellent thanks to the Becker rudder and she could muster a good turn of speed

Mrs RJR taking the helm, I would have brushed my hair if I had known I was going to be in the pictures

Although the lakes cafe proved more of an attraction for my two ladies

While testing her out we had a minor hiccup, after about 10 minutes she came to a halt about 15' from the landing stage and wouldn't respond. Initial thoughts were a loose universal to motor shaft connection as we could hear motor noise. Duckie gallantly rowed out in the clubs rescue boat and towed Maggie back in. Turns out my engineering was not called into question.. The prop had dragged some polythene bag into the kortz nozzle and left her with no propulsion. After untangling the obstruction she was back in the water and running fine again.

To all that have followed this thread Thankyou. To Duckie who bought me the kit as a wedding anniversary present THANK YOU. Maggie is not complete, she still has several details to add but she is now a working part of my little fleet. A video will follow very shortly with more updates of the detailing will follow in the coming weeks

At the risk of boring, a few pictures of yesterday from my camera. The last batch were taken by Duckie

Not posted for a while, life has taken over from modelling but that happens sometimes. I did sail Maggie a couple of weeks ago and thought you might like to see a shot of her docked.

I need to get a bit of motivation and get cracking on adding some more of the details, like the nets !

Question... Nearly every model of Maggie I have seen has the nets draped over the power block. Given her condition of trawl doors rigged and hanging out what would be an appropriate way of modelling the nets.

Stored on the drums
One on the drum one being wound on the drum via the power block from the net pool

Thoughts?

Nets
« Reply #86 on: November 19, 2012, 09:27:39 pm »

The previous Maggie M post have been retrospective, from now on they are current.
Last week I took Maggie to the Etherow Model Boat Club meeting, it was the annual building competition  and I thought I'd enter her for a bit of fun. I don't think she will win anything, having seen the standard, but you never know.

I had hoped that I would get an evening to do some detailing before the judging, but it didn't happen. I did however get a couple of hours over the weekend. As the picture above shows Maggie now has nets !!

The string of buoys in the first picture are retaining chains from the bottom of vertical blinds, clips trimmed and painted yellow and orange.

I also added fixed and flexible piping to the Powerblock

Some of the rigging on the mast and boom

Its a shame these bits weren't done before judging but that's what happens when li

Like the net buoys look just big enough without being over the top, same as the weathering, just enough without covering the excellent build.
As you say shame you couldn't get some more detailing before the judging, but family should always come first hey!.

Yes, I do see you are short on time :)

Nice work - I'm all in favour of weathering models, otherwise they just look to me like, well, models.

RJR won 2 x 3rd prizes at the club awards night, 1 for his Semi scratch built day fishing boat and 1 for this Maggie M build, not bad for his first year in boat building I would say, there again I'm biased.
He has yet to post his bits he didn't get round to doing before the judging, which could have made a differance hey, your slipping John!.

Hi RGR
Love your build, just about to start Maggie May. Looked at your paintwork, could you advise what paint you used and what colours, Slipway way state Humbrol but don't give any colour numbers, once again a great build

A first class build RJR & very thrusting to let the boss sail her, you must be planning something subversive but I won't ask, whats next on the agenda. Keep us posted & thanks again for sharing, Mick B.

we stored our spare nets  in the net rack ( under cover ) so they don't wash over board in bad weather

I know this is quite an old post but I'm finding it very useful as I embark on my Maggie M build. I'm a complete novice in this area never having built a boat before. The thing that is bugging me right now is how best to make provision for access into the hull of the completed model so that the battery can be taken in/out, the control gear can be adjusted and the ballasting can be set up whilst at the same time making all of the decking and superstructure securable when sailing.

I wonder if anyone can provide advice and/ or photos of how it's done?

Any contributions would be most welcome.
