What sort of size things are you going to be solder / brazing?

Read and digest, no affiliation but these people are highly regarded in the toy engineering world. Silver Solder paste in tubes is efficient.

This topic has been covered before, maybe a fellow mayhemmer will post a link, the argument was which was better a blow torch or a soldering iron where the general consensus was any soldering iron in the 40w region and a blow torch can range from as big as that used in the plumbing trade to a little pen torch, what was more important than anything else was to clean everything and then clean again.  :-) , though pity cannot get the swmbo to do this bit  >:-o

For the small stuff I'd use an iron. A mast might be a bit too massive for that - depends on sizes and material. If it was too much I'd then grab a small torch for it.
I can't see it being worth using silver solder for any of those - I'd stick to a decent electrical solder.

Oh, and get a 100W temperature controlled iron. It'll make it so much easier.

Do NOT repeat NOT buy a so-called solder gun.
They are useless for most soldering.

Each to his own, I have used a Weller Gun for years, doing fine constructional brass work et al. Depends on how you use them.

If you want to start with railings then first get an electric soldering iron. This will be useful anyway for making connections in motor wires, extending servo leads etc. If you find that there are jobs it can't heat up enough, then go for a blowtorch - this will enable you to soft solder big things or silver solder small things.

I doubt you are going to build a working boiler ever, but in this case especially:

If you have soft soldered a joint you cannot silver solder it afterwards even if you have cleaned the joint. I do not know why but I have spoken to fellow model engineers at the Chichester club (CDSME) and I got sharp intakes of breath and groans of distress.

I think the lead in the soft solder (Possibly other constituent parts as well ) weakens the silver soldered joint.

Therefore, a soft soldered joint has to remain just that, or you have to remake the part and silver solder it.

I am not sure of the details, but the reaction of several venerable and trusted engineers definitely told me loads!

Go gas...

1. be clean  O0......the quality of flux is also critical....be clean  O0

2. un-soaped steel wool is preferable to aluminium oxide or carborundum paper when cleaning [the effect of the latter looks shiny, but leaves a dust residue]  after cleaning, do not touch a cleaned joint section with your fingers >>:-( ...skin contain grease .....grease does nor solder well

3. heat the area surrounding the joint.....not the joint itself

4. kitchen tissue saturated with water is a good heat-sink as are metal clamps.....when soldering in close proximity or a pre soldered joint

5. a kitchen hand held water spray pump pack can be handy for quick cooling

6. a few pairs of surgical forceps' are very useful in holding small objects

7. plenty of heat capacity from a micro pencil to a large torch......you don't need luck.......just practice

8. an old large refractory brick is also very useful as a work bed

...be clean..... Derek  O0

I think Ned meant don't buy a solder gun, buy a soldering iron. The gun (looks like a gun)m are useless.

Check our youtube- hundreds of videos under soldering.
