Self adhesive lettering - lower case
« on: March 10, 2014, 12:38:55 pm »

I need some lettering at about 5mm in lower case for a website address on the hull of a boat. Looked at Barry's and BECC but they only have sheets of uppercase. Online sign supplies generally only go down to 10mm, so I'm a bit stumped.
Any suggestions?

I usually get my lettering from  'The Range'

They do all sorts of artistic stuff for the constructor.

Have you tried sending your requirements to Barry
on his special order form.?

Unfortunately Googling 'The Range' brings a huge selection of hits. Can you be a bit more specific?

TBH I sent a him request for a special order quote for something else a while back and the reply did not inspire confidence. And it would also be horribly expensive.

I'm just amazed that no-one seems to do lower case lettering. (I know, I know, "There's no demand for it!" :) )

Barrys model lettering can do lowercase letters made up into words
and ready to apply direct to a clean and dry surface,
give us a ring and we will see what we can do.

Oh, that 'The Range'. That was top of the results but didn't seem likely to me. :embarrassed:
The nearest one isn't very convenient but I'll bear it in mind.

I've never really got on with dry rub transfers for lettering - it's so hard to get the alignment right and I end up using twice as many characters and damaging the paint surface getting the 'mistakes' off. So that would be a bit of a last resort.

Thanks, but I really don't want to pay the premium for pre-made words (I've had a quote before). I'd rather have sheets of letters and spend a little time getting them how I want.

I eventually found some 1/4" (just over 6mm) lettering from a company called "minilabel". They have their own website and also operate on Amazon and ebay - I actually bought from ebay. Very quick delivery.

The only downside is that it was a bit expensive for what I need right now at £9 (incl del'y). However, for what it is it isn't bad value when you compare with what you get per £ on e.g. a BECC sheet as it's a big sheet (slightly larger than A4) with over 1000 characters including numbers, upper and lower case, etc. I expect some of the letters I don't need immediately will come in useful at some point, so probably not a bad deal.

The sheet is made in the USA. I haven't used any of it yet, so I don't yet know how the quality compares to BECC.

Done the first boat now. The lettering may have a very slight 'rim' I think (possibly laser cut) but isn't noticeable. The letters came off the backing sheet and went on without any particular problems. I'll be giving the whole hull a coat of satin 'varnish' to seal and 'level' all the lettering and symbols, so providing they don't get upset at that stage I'd say "job's a good 'un"  :-))
