No output power from brushless motors
« on: March 12, 2014, 05:46:58 pm »

Hi I have just done a deal/swap for a Lifeboat as I know nothing about brushless motors or  brushless esc, There is fitted 2 new ezerun  brushless motors and 2 new hobby king 100amp brushless esc and programmed both motors the same, now the port and starboard motors worked fine with his spectrum system, now and I have connected my planet system . It all worked fine out of the water, ahead and astern, but putting it in the water there is very little power and the boat just creeps along. Can anyone help me out with this problem please?
Thanks,
Mick F

Mick
How long is a piece of string, mate? Problem could be one or more of:
1. Wrong motors (too small or not enough KV)
2. Wrong batteries (not enough volts)
3. Wrong props (too big OR wrong pitch)
4. Radio not giving "full" signal at full ahead (Planet 5 is a swine for non-standard throttle neutrals).

Solution? Either muck about ad infinitum trying to optimise any or all of the above, or buy and install the same type of Spektrum radio that the previous owner used.

Sometimes the rocket science is just too hard.

Hi Dave,
Martin said it was too fast for him, so it must be the Planet, although I have had no problem with it on any of my other boats.I am hoping I will not have to programme it all in again (which I havent done!)

Daft as it may sound Mick, Dose it go in full power in REV??  If yes then you may have to rev the throttle setting on your tranny and swop the motor connections. IF none of the above ????  Some ESC have a limited rev setting ie a set % rate 20% 50% etc

there is a little faster speed in reverse, which is about right.
reverse force has been set at 25%
brake force whatever that is 100%
other settings (none of which I understand) are
cut off voltage- 00.0v
start power-     00.0%
middle advance timing 2
two2 run mode 3
drag brake force 0
natural range 8%
Int  brk force 5%

middle advance timing 2   Is there a Auto setting?
two2 run mode 3  Pass
drag brake force 0 PASS
natural range 8% Pass

As it was running on the spectrum radio makes me think the ESC setting are oK . Have you had to change to motor connections when you fitted  the Planet?
My Tamar has twin brushless motors and esc and it runs just fine on my Planet .

May be worth a try Mick. change two of the motor connections over on each motor. Change the TX throttle switch and see what it dose then.

I changed two of the wires over on one of the motors last night, because I had one motor running astern instead of ahead with the tx stick forward, I just swapped the red and blue  wires in the connection block round and  left the black where it was .this got it running the right way.I should have realised then that there wasnt much draught coming past my hand when I held it near the prop.

Set reverse force to 100, just in case.

What voltage did it run when he had it and are you running the same?

Also have the ezerun motors have an id number, like 3548/5 (or similar) on them anywhere?

everything is running on the same as Martin had before, the batteries (charged!) came with it.
All I have done is change two of the wires over as one  motor was running in reverse.Of course I also inserted my rx and tuned it in!

And both motors are slow, not just the one you changed?

Because that then points to the RX/TX and I haven't got any experience with the planet ones (Yet! Going for the T7 on my Tamar).

thanks to bill d023,
I have sorted one side out at least! port side running stronger but stbd still slower with more power in reverse.I have tried changing the two wires over but no difference in power.I will have another go in the morning .
Thanks for all the advice so far!

O K guys,
my son came over this morning who is a bit wiser than me with electronics. He swapped every combination of wires that could be done, end result...no change >>:-( .As a last resort we picked up the  radio, and reversed the second switch along, and that was it ! Job done! SEEMPLES!
(not) !

Thanks for all the help, from all concerned, and the telephone help from Bill, we did get there in the end ! :-)) :-)) :} :} :} O0 O0 {-) {-)
Trouble is now the wife says I have spent time enough on the boat and she is demanding I go out and repair the greenhouse,oh well you cant win them all!
Cheers,
