What Batteries to use?
« on: March 20, 2014, 01:17:42 pm »

Hi all,
I am going to run two Turnigy 3542/5 1250KV Max curr 46 amps motors and two 50 amp ESC's  in a 1/16 Tamar,
I want to use a 11.1V lipo battery for each motor but this C rating is bothering me, would it be better to use 2x 4500mah 3s 65C or 2x5000mah 35C ?
Also what rating fuse would you suggest to protect these ESC's and motors?
Your help will be appreciated

The C rating informs you of the factor which the C rate (e.g. 4500mA) can be supplied by the pack. For example, a 65C pack of 4.5AH can supply 65 x 4.5 = 292.5A. If your motors will draw a maximum of 46A continuously (which I reckon is unlikely anyway) then you don't need anything much more than 10C. I would personally fit the 5000mAH 35C packs for longer duration.
As for fusing, good luck finding a 50A fuse and holder! I'm afraid I take all of the figures quoted about brushless motor currents with a large dose of scepticism, especially when you relate them to the size of the cables fitted to the speed controllers and motors. I guess I'm the wrong bloke to advise you, so I won't try!

:-)) I run 500kv on14.4v with a 70amp ESC with a 55m/m 4 blade prop, I use a 30amp fuse and have not had any problems, as your motor is smaller I think you should try the same, the motor and the ESC run cool even after a 30min run,Ray. :-)) :-)) :-))

Thanks Grace,
Went to Halfords and got some spade fuses that will suit me, they had fuses up to 60amps and holders.

My honest opinion, use a lower voltage with those motors, unless your running less than 50 mm props. Have you done a bathtub test at all
