Do white metal fittings corrode ????
« on: March 21, 2014, 01:05:48 pm »

Hi All,

A question ......... I have to put a few rigging lines on....... and have (what are supposed to represent) white metal rigging screws. Now, in reality they would probably be galvanised so could be left unpainted....... but will they corrode in time ????

Depends how old they are!  If they are old stock they may contain lead which does oxidise with time.  The white residue is quite obvious but it does take quite a long time to develop and a coat of clear lacquer is usually sufficient to prevent it.
Newer fittings should be lead free and shouldn't oxidise.

The kit is fairly new so maybe I'll be ok........ But some clear laquer anyway might be a good idea.
