Newbie first springer build
« on: March 30, 2014, 08:35:47 pm »

Hi all,

This is my first ever wooden boat build and it's a Springer!

Probably going to make loads of mistakes with this but hopefully the following springer(s) will be better.

Did have some trouble bending the ply to form the hull base plate, the first laminate fractured and peeled off.

Anyway, here are a few pics (if this works).

Regards,

Richard

You might try cutting the base into strips and laying them port to starboard. Build up the strips moving fwd to aft. When dry, fill the gaps with filler before painting.

Keep the pics coming.

Thanks for the suggestion Ian, I will possibly try that for no.2
This is my first go at a wooden boat, so any more suggestions would be great. If it all fails, I'll just make a steel one :-)

What glue are you using? Aliphatic is good.

I'll look that up, do most model suppliers stock it? I'm currently using weatherproof ova by evostik. I plan to fill and gaps with filler, then resin over the whole outside of the hull. Inside I plan to lay chopped strand mat (csm) over the joins to strengthen them and resin over the inside to waterproof. Is it wise to resin over the deck too?

Your springer bottom wood looks really thick, I usually use 1mm - 1.5mm ply.
No resin or matting just good preparation for the finish coat, about 4 coats of sanding sealer.
I am building one at the moment with a fibreglass hull from Models by Design, the only wood is the supports inside to fix the deck to, a servo mount and somewhere to mount the esc and switching unit.

Brian,

It's 6mm, which is probably why the bottom laminate has split and come away.  Thanks for the information on suggested thickness and the fibreglass hull.

As an aside, that's a nice shot of Regain on your avatar. I see her running most days..

Did you you marine ply?
Also. I soaked my bottom in water overnight to soften it up.   ;D

Martin,

It's WBP (weather & boil proof) but not marine stamped. The ply was soaked overnight but I think if I use ply this thick again, I'd fabricate some form of steamer.

Best of luck then, think that's a bit too advanced for me. Do you have a build log, I'd be interested to see the build.

I hope to be able to make a TID next.

You know if you turn the plywood 90 degrees, so the outside veneers run across from side to side, the ply will be easy to bend, and probably stronger.
cheers
