Which adhesive to use
« on: April 01, 2014, 09:47:59 pm »

After a few years break I am returning to modelling and building a Kyosho Fairwind Yacht the version with the ABS moulded hull.

What are the best / recommended adhesives for attaching wooden framework inside the hull with this material.

What is the best sealant to use with leadshot type ballast in the keel

cheers

Robbe always recommend stabilit express for abs, it's not cheap but it is very good stuff.
Alternatives a uhu plus acrylit or shop4glue do their own called stable express which is quite a bit cheaper but does the job

I would certainly use epoxy resin for the lead shot. Especially if in the keel bulb.

You need to get in the maximum amount of shot and minimum amount of glue for the best weight.

The method I would recommend is to use a 2 hour epoxy (not 5min) put a little epoxy in the bulb, pour in some shot and move it around by tipping/rollling the keel bulb until all the shot is coated. Then add more shot (not glue yet) until the shot is not longer fully coated, then add a little more shot. Keep repeating.
Depending on design of the keel. If the keel is plunged into the glue and shot, leave room at the top of the bulb to allow for the displaced shot. Then top off with glue that can be given a nice finish when dried and trimmed.
If the buld is attached some other way then allow for this.

ABS to wood, epoxy is also good. Remember to clean and scour the glueing surface of the ABS to allow the glue to grab well. I didn't on my first model and the radio tray broke away leaving an my boat uncontrolled as the radio tray held all the servos, now pusing on nothing.

The Victoria was prone to the servo/battery box coming adrift.
ABS hull and ply box.
Epoxy works after a couple of goes :-))

Three options in order of strength -

1) Lay strips of lightweight (e.g. 50g/m2) glass cloth on the ABS and brush some liquid poly on it to melt the plastic in to the cloth. After this has set, use some 30 minute epoxy (preferably with some micro fibres mixed in) to glue the wood to the glass cloth coated ABS.

2) Key the ABS with a grit around 400 and glue the wood to the ABS with 30 minute epoxy (preferably with some micro fibres mixed in).

3) Key the ABS with a grit around 400 and glue the wood to the ABS with a decent medium cyano, e.g. Zap-a-Gap or Gorilla (NOT pound shop superglue).

Agree, I had that problem.
Scouring the surface of the ABS with sandpaper or a knife first fixes this.

I have always used fibreglass car body filler to fix framing into hulls .agree with tigertiger most important thing is to key the surface to insure a good bond
