Gluing Alluminium to Alluminium
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:33:54 am »

Would contact adhesive securely join two pieces of Alluminium together. ?    Has anyone tried this, or is there a better way please.

Cheers

Yes there are many different methods of joining aluminium ...
Please confirm size or sections  %)

Hi Derek,

I am building a Bus at the moment and have to join vertical sheets to angle strips at the bottom so as to not have screws protruding into the cabin on it's front edge.  That way, I can bolt down vertically behind the sheet to the horizontal floor.    %)

The forces endured would be in 3 dimensions but not a great stress.

Hope this helps.

As an aside...  Would you leave the surfaces smooth or rough them up.  (no violence intended)

Hi Ken,
you could try a good brand of double sides tape, and as long as both surfaces are clean, this stuff sticks like the proverbial to a blanket.
There are two types, one is a layer of adhesive between two silicon strips, remove one silicon strip, apply to one surface, remove other silicon strip, position and press along to make the join. Care is needed as you get only one shot.
The other is a mylar strip with adhesive each side, and silicon strip over that, application same as above. Just a bit wider gap in the joint.
Prefer the first one myself. Never had a failure yet, touch wood.
cheers

ps this similar to gluing windscreens and commercial frameless windows, and full size coach building.

Kenny,
I had a 9ft long Canberra that was made out of aluminium I acquired  %)

it was glued together using what seemed like Bostick, it was a brown rubbery glue
some parts fell off and I just glued them back with normal medium superglue and they held
until I sold it on
hope that helps  :-))

many years ago I worked in the aluminium double glazing industry, the best stuff we had was a double sided tape, used on clean aluminium (cleaned with solvents) the tape was permanent. don't ask me where it came from though.

I have been experimenting today and now have several test versions under clamps.

I will report back on the results.    :}

Today I examined the Evostick Impacts adhesive.  I had made a cross out of two strips and after sanding and gluing both surfaces, clamped it overnight in a cross formation.

The joint felt secure when I tried to pull it apart vertically, but when twisted sideways it sheared the joint quite easy. The residue still felt soft and rubbery to the touch.

Today I'll try the epoxy for the same test.

Hullo Ken....as previously mentioned...... <*< .."yes there are many different methods of joining aluminium"

Despite American producers of various adhesive GOOS ........."yes you can glue aluminium to aluminium"........NASA suggests the only acceptable form of bonding/joining aluminium material to aluminium material is by fusion.........

In the West Australian capital of OZ we build the best aluminium high speed catamaran style vessels [up to 2000+++++ tonnes] & accepted by the world as the best design & form of construction  :-)) & orders are flowing in from the USN & Europe for our builds O0

They are welded construction..........   %) Derek

i like the idea of welding    and then   I don't fancy doing it.    te he

Thanks fellas.   The idea is on hold while I try countersunk screws.  It's only one side where they will show and even this might be half hidden with paint.

Cheers

There is one OTHER WAY OF DOING IT

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPOILER-BODY-KIT-PANEL-ADHESIVE-GLUE-SIDE-SKIRTS-BOND-/220971753722?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3372f160fa#ht_1151wt_952

I use this to hold on spoilers body kits on rally cars and BELIEVE you ME the forces that are applied to spoilers are a lot greater than your model.usually when you put this stuff on you will WRECK the panel trying to take it off.

Ken, I can help you out here...I have some double sided tape that my old mate Andy (user name ''tattooed'' on here) got me, it's used to hold large alloy panels together on breast screening trailers, race car trailers, etc. I've had a couple of inches of the stuff holding a bookcase to my bedroom wall for ages now, and there's no signs of it moving. I did try it first on a part of the wall hidden away from view, and when I tried to pull it off, it took the plaster off with it...

I don't know what it's called, but you are more than welcome to some if you wish. But beware...you get once chance and one chance only of positioning the parts before you attach them.

Thanks for the idea Rich. I have had to use countersunk screws and nuts as the bonding agents were not suitable.  Glue does work on large flat areas but doesn't take take the stress of right angle joints on small pieces
Cheers
