I,ll agree that Saving Private Ryan...is up there for realism....but...had you seen ..the un-edited version of Sam Peckinpah,s...Cross of Iron....like i did at the cinema....there was a moment when every man in that cinema...flinched at what happened in the barn sequence....with a female Russian soldier.....suffice to say....it was,nt for the feint hearted....and the close combat sequences between the German rearguard and the advancing Russians....was up there with Private Ryan....if not ahead...and bear in mind...this film was over 20 years before Private Ryan.......

Surprised that Burt Lancaster`s "The Train" didn't get a mention. Shot in black and white in France about the  resistance thwarting an attempt by the Nazis to take a trainload of priceless artworks to Germany towards the end of WWII.  Lots of real explosions, authentic aircraft and steam engines etc etc. Made in the 60s.  Someone mentioned "The Charge of the Light Brigade". There was a big scam just prior to it being made with a company recruiting extras for the film.  A few months in the Crimea, tented accommodation on the Black Sea (?) good pay, food etc etc. I was measured for uniform, asked if I could ride a horse, if not could I fall off realistically etc etc.  Paid my £30 registration fee and waited the call with my South African pal, a fellow officer ( "could shout in Afrikaans to sound like a Russian Cossack ! " )   The dream ended when we were contacted by the police asking if we had paid cash or cheque, if the latter might get our money back  if cash too bad. The organiser did time for her little caper, seems she recruited in a dozen UK cities for her 600 extras. The genuine film was made using the Turkish army :((

Don't think anyone has mentioned Days of Glory.  As powerful and as moving as Private Ryan and tells the war from the perspective from a seldom heard of soldiering group Algerian Muslim nationals fighting for the free French. Realistic and moving.

Yes Cross of Iron was a brutally realistic film but though it was brilliant (James Coburn particularly)
I always thought it was made as an anti-war film

The Pianist...a Roman Polanski film about surviving in the Warsaw Ghetto
The Boys in Company C....the original and best Vietnam movie.
Fortress of War.....about the German attack on Brest.....good battle scenes and tanks.
City of Life and Death....About the Japanese 'Rape of Nanking'....brutal.
And the rest of the films that have been mentioned

Enemy at the Gates is a film that takes a very different perspective of the battle of Stalingrad. A good story, a strong cast, and don't let the fact that Jude Law is in it put you off.

A good wartime time crime film worth watching is Night of the Generals, it uses the Warsaw Ghetto destruction and the assassination attempt on Hilter as the backdrop to a serial killer plot. Starring Peter O Toole and Tom Courtney.
