Help required in posting pics using Apple/ Mac
« on: April 14, 2014, 08:32:51 pm »

Can anybody help me on posting pics on the forum using a Mac computer.
MY Mac is 8- years old and I can post pics on 3- other forums with no problem.

I used to be able to post on the forum but after the change over this isn't possible.
When I re size to 600 x 450 and try to post this is the response that comes up, my pics are J.P.G.

(You cannot upload that type of file. The only allowed extensions are txt, doc, jpg, gif, pdf,PNG. )

Some times I get a full screen white page with

ERROR AND LINE AFTER LINE OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS and the post doesn't go.

Any help from a Mac user would be appreciated.

George.

:-)...George...not a Mac user but as discussed off line, being able to post .jpg images on other WEB sites suggests it is related to the MBM configuration, however the interesting point is that MBM is seeing your image as a file format that is not either of the following..."txt, doc, jpg, gif, pdf, PNG"

You have my home e-mail address, as a trial....e-mail a typical image to me....I will then confirm on this thread the extension format I received the image & attempt post it here

Another test is to go to the properties of an individual image & confirm the file format....all of my images have an extension of .JPG.......although lower case .jpg is the same
I have not heard of an extension  J.P.G

I've just had a look at one of your pics that I have and my computer (windows7)
has it down as JPEG image, that's how it's written exactly. I can't help with that but will post any pictures you want on your thread (give me a link or title) I can resize them for you as well. You can add your words in a post next to them.
Kindest regards
Jerry.

George maybe has something to do with the program used to save the files (check when you save as on the drop down list the format should be .jpg.
I do not think it has anything to do with apple computer( just my thoughts
Cheers

Goodness.....  >>:-(

1. engineers do not accept or give up on ERROR messages......... <*<
2. now the WEB owner [Martin] can see the messages....... lets give a chance for an understanding & resolution
3. any other member would be happy to post your images George........but what happens if Jerry wins the POOLS or gets run over by a bus?  {-)

My offer below still stands.......so lets get your system working.........

'you have my home e-mail address, as a trial....e-mail a typical image to me....I will then confirm on this thread the extension format .xxx I received the image in,  & attempt post it here'

I sometimes get that, ( I think it just the server having a cup of tea! ), the work around is to write the post - and then post it.
Click [ Modify ] and add photos afterwards.

The easiest way that I have found to put pictures onto any forum is to put the pictures onto a hosting site like photobucket first and then simply copy the direct link onto your post  :-))

Hi Rob,

It is a pic sized in I.Photo to 600 x 415  placed on the desk top and named (g/box with s/ eccentric/1)

I then go into attachments and other options  on the forum and then click on the browser to import the pic.
I have tried to post 1- off, and then tried multiple pics all with the same result.

The hair that I have left is diminishing fast.

Ahhh…. It may be that the forum software is trying to interpret the '/' in your filename.

Try renaming your file to remove the '/'  ie gbox with seccentric1.jpg

If that doesn't work try removing the spaces too.

Rob ,
I have tried all of the suggestions and more without spaces and slashes, tried JPG, JPEG all to no avail.

Thanks for the help

Well, I'm out of ideas…

But just a note. Mac OS X will not let you create a filename with a '/' in it. It will be interpreted as a command to step up the file system.

Whilst searching for your error message, I found something on a LandRover forum - but annoyingly the last post was something like 'It's OK, I fixed it now!' - without mentioning HOW they did it!!!  >:-o

George.....I think Robert has the answer................& this is why I was asking for one of your file images

It certainly could be the inclusion of a / in the file name.........Derek
___________________________________________________________________

From Wikipedia

Long filenames (LFN), are Microsoft's way of implementing filenames longer than the 8.3 filename, or short-filename, naming scheme used in Microsoft DOS in their modern FAT and NTFS filesystems. Because these filenames can be longer than an 8.3 filename, they can be more descriptive. Another advantage of this scheme is that it allows longer extensions common on other operating systems (e.g. .jpeg, .tiff, .html, and .xhtml) rather than specialized shortened names (e.g. .jpg, .tif, .htm, .xht). The first Microsoft Windows operating system to implement long filenames on FAT was Windows NT 3.5 in 1994.

The long filename system allows a maximum length of 255 UTF-16 characters,[1][2][3] including spaces and non-alphanumeric characters (excluding the following characters, which have special meaning within the command interpreter or the operating system kernel: \ / : * ? " < > |). This is achieved by chaining up to 20 directory entries of 13 2-byte unicode characters each.[

In my attempt to understand a possible fix here for George.......I trialed....

a. located a simple .jpg file with the file name of P1110206
b. attempted to rename it with a / in the name as P/1110206
c. in Windows an ERROR message is displayed stating that / [& other symbols] are not permitted and despite repeated attempts to insert a /....it could not be accepted
d. OK ...I do understand that I am talking Windows & not Mac..........but the protocol is associated with the File format & naming.....not the operating system

From this it again suggests that the images George is attempting to upload may well be in the valid .jpg  format, however may have one or more invalid symbols in the file name  :o............Derek
