It was very considerate of you to arrange the major outage whilst I was on holiday. It means I didn't miss half as much as I thought I would {-) %% {-) %% O0

Congratulations to the team for saving the site.

Who do I sue for the stress driven repetitive strain injury caused by my constantly pressing the Mayhem shortcut on my browser again, and again, and again for days on end? %)

Thanks for the repair but at what financial cost to our leader is it time for us to put our hand in our pockets to help the cause

Hosting Support:  We was able to repair the database tables. The table name had .TMM for the extension where it should have been MYI. After changing this and repairing the table it appears to be clean.

It might be time to mention that ALL donations and contributions to the running of the site are always greatly appreciated.

I know I missed it, as did others who contacted me.  There is a lot of back-room work going into maintaining such a site as ours and these things cost money, so please help if you can.

Thanks

Ken

Boo-hoo and embarrassment to me! :embarrassed:  I didn't know it was broken until three days ago. It was quite a shock. :o  I am pleased today to see you are still here and fully recovered from the ordeal. I was going to send a Get Well Soon card. It's not nice to have to have the leccies' fingers stuck up your diodes!

Going back to Tug Kenny's post 1043, running a site like this costs money and the better the financial position then the more secure it will be.

There is unfortunately a tendency on the Internet to take website forums for granted and to plunder them to your advantage. The advice apparently comes for free as does the time taken by people who give it equally freely.

The reality is that nothing is truly free, there is always a cost which comes out somewhere and which is not always appreciated. This website costs hard cash to run while the advice given is at the expense of the posters doing something else, possibly more congenial, with their time. I think most members recognise this and that there is an implicit bargain to be struck. If you are a keen model boater then membership of a site like this must be worth £10- £20 a year in all conscience. If most members took this view then Mayhem would be adequately funded and not reliant on Martin's largesse, not to mention the time he gives to keeping the site running. It's not rocket science but many people do seem to make the assumption that anything on the Internet should be free to the user. If the site is subsidised then that is fine but Mayhem does not fall into that category to any appreciable extent so the contributions that you make go directly to supporting the site you enjoy - so what's not to like?!

This may be stating the obvious but it is extraordinary just how many people miss the point.

Thank you for your comments Colin.

What you say is fundamentally correct, if a little over-stated.

I’d hate to think that anyone would be discouraged from using the website through shortage of the filthy lucre. I’d prefer to say chip in as much you can afford (remembering the story of the widow’s mite). If cash is tight then at least share your equally valuable stories and experience.

Roger,

I wasn't getting at anyone in particular, least of all yourself and yes, perhaps I was being a bit over emphatic. Most of the information you find on the web is indeed free to the viewer for one reason or another and circumstances will always vary. Enthusiast sites such as Mayhem usually do function on a bit of a shoestring when it comes to the hosting side of things so it is always good if regular users can assist in keeping the show on the road as is indeed the case with many Mayhem members. You wouldn't expect casual visitors to do so of course. Members are happy to share their expertise for free in the general interests of supporting a shared hobby and encouraging new modellers to take it up but even in this case there is a responsibility on the part of the 'Newbie' to have a look around the site and use the search facilities before asking questions which have probably already been asked and answered may times before. The Newbie certainly needs those answers but very often they are already there under the appropriate heading. They may of course give rise to further questions to meet a particular need and it is at that point that the expertise of other members can be tapped to the benefit of all concerned.

One of the other forums I belong to is concerned with my particular make of car and we frequently get people jumping in with questions such as 'what are the best tyres to use' when there is a whole section devoted to wheels and tyres listed on the Forum front page. Why they don't look at that first just beats me! With model boating the old chestnuts include things like basic information on batteries, electrics generally, propellers etc. and the same queries just come up over and over again because people have not bothered to check on the information already there. I suppose it is a people thing really....  %)
