Going back to Tug Kenny's post 1043, running a site like this costs money and the better the financial position then the more secure it will be.
There is unfortunately a tendency on the Internet to take website forums for granted and to plunder them to your advantage. The advice apparently comes for free as does the time taken by people who give it equally freely.
The reality is that nothing is truly free, there is always a cost which comes out somewhere and which is not always appreciated. This website costs hard cash to run while the advice given is at the expense of the posters doing something else, possibly more congenial, with their time. I think most members recognise this and that there is an implicit bargain to be struck. If you are a keen model boater then membership of a site like this must be worth £10- £20 a year in all conscience. If most members took this view then Mayhem would be adequately funded and not reliant on Martin's largesse, not to mention the time he gives to keeping the site running. It's not rocket science but many people do seem to make the assumption that anything on the Internet should be free to the user. If the site is subsidised then that is fine but Mayhem does not fall into that category to any appreciable extent so the contributions that you make go directly to supporting the site you enjoy - so what's not to like?!
This may be stating the obvious but it is extraordinary just how many people miss the point.
