I try to keep adverts to a minimum on Mayhem.... yes I know I don't know how the world and the Interwebs work!

But you kind generosity is truly amazing!
Just a little way to go and we're back in the black..... or is that also politically incorrect these days!   %)

Hi,

Did you perhaps mean 'various shades of grey' ?

Mind you here in Oz there is a transgender school principal who wants to ban the words Mum and Dad.

Too complicated to operate I think unless you just ask people to make a PayPal donation every time you advertise.
Colin

I would suggest that a sensible "gentleman's agreement" is proposed so that when you sell an item on Mayhem - a 5% donation of sale proceeds is deposited into the  "keep Mayhem on-line fund"

I would hope that this would be acceptable to forum members and a good way to top up the pot - Anybody second my suggestion?

That sounds an excellent idea.  It would have to be made clear that this is an optional, but greatly appreciated, system that allows Martin to keep this forum going without him having to appeal for crowd sourced funding whenever annual hosting / server upgrade costs come up.   5% on sales over say £20 is not a big deal, especially when without this forum member sellers would otherwise have had to resort to more risky selling means.

Remember, how else can we rely on daily doses of swashbuckling humour coupled with seriously interesting build info

Hello,

A show of Hands would be a good idea -  - but first, lets get the Donations up to date.
Then we can all relax and get back onto the straight and level.
Lets get everything organised, then, we can sort out how to prevent this from ever happening again !!!.
I am still worrying !!.

A voluntary 5% donation seems quite acceptable especially when one considers that the item is generally seen by a dedicated audience and sale is quite likely, I estimate about 175 entries so far this year in the For Sale lists and most items eventually change hands, so over the course of a year should raise a few £s.  As Henry Ford said 'there's no such thing as a free lunch' and while we all pay one way and another for our use of internet sites, this Forum is free to us as readers and contributors while there are many that require a membership fee to read/use the main content of the site or are blighted by advertising banners and videos. If it came to the crunch, I for one would rather pay a small annual fee than have funding advertisements popping up all over the place.

regarding your concerns about 'popping adverst all over the place'. If you mean adverts from traders etc then I would not have adverts, as we know most if not all of the traders through good practice reports and the fact that a good number of traders etc are actually memebers like Dean's, Linkspan etcrequests for money.

If you mean Mayhem adverts calling for funds, then the odd one can't hurt, especially if it helps prevent panic moments like we had this week.

No, by my use of the phrase 'funding adverts' I wasn't referring to in house adverts appealing for funds such as we had this week- that is quite acceptable- after all it's a sort of whip round amongst friends , what I meant was the selling of space to commercial advertising to fund the site. Some forums that I have dipped into ( mostly across the pond) do have banners and pop-ups advertising all manner of businesses

Don't even think about commercial ADs Martin , some forums are clogged stupid with them, & slow their sites down drastically .
I have ad block on google chrome on my main machine & not on the secondary comp', the differences in speed on the 'free' forums are mind boggling at times, some of the banners are that badly constructed they've frozen the page , needing to close the browser to get off it . . .

I don`t really see a problem, if all the Mayhem members chipped in a few pounds, the question of adverts would never arise.   Before anyone asks, yes I have.  Pete

Martin usually does an annual reminder for donations which I think works quite well and the response to exceptional circumstances, as in this case, seems to show that the membership are very willing to respond when asked.

If you value a privately owned website then a small annual contribution to the hosting costs, if requested,  is the right thing to do. Small sums from a lot of people soon add up.

We've Done it chaps!

We're all funded up for the next and now able to make the back end server changes required.
A huge thank you for all donations, particularly the small ones, the middle range ones and the couple of large ones too!

To insure the long term financial stability of Mayhem, the funds will be used as follows:
High interest account with Barings Bank,
Hedge fund with Enron,
Several high yield investments on the Nigerian Stock Exchange,
Couple of acres of land near the San Andreas fault,
A cannabis sativa herbal house farm on the wrong side of the tracks,
And a bet on England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland winning the World Cup.
...... I'll share any profits out accordingly!

Again, a big thank you to all contributors.
Those that had PayPal issues, please drop some shekels in a RNLI tin.

Wonderful news Martin.  Excellent   :-))  {-)

PS:  My comment about PayPal was just that I read that other forms of payment were preferred.
I tried, but it diverted to Paypal anyway - which went through fine.

Well done everybody - but as a footnote to this, I bet most Mayhemers take one (or more) of the modelling mags available out there.  Consider how much an annual subscription is to one of those, then consider the sheer volume and quality of material you get here compared to those mags.  Not knocking the press, just saying that MBM delivers a heck of a lot and is worth at least the same as an annual mag subscription.   O0 O0

Unless of course Martin's investment plans deliver the anticipated massive return, then we can all save ourselves a few quid!   %% %%
