Bulwark supports (stanchions?)
« on: April 20, 2014, 08:09:48 AM »

On a turn of the century era steam tug, did the vertical stiffener/ support pieces for the bulwarks remain vertical as the deck angle changes with sheer at bow and stern, or were the perpendicular to the decks/ gunwale tops (ie raked forward at the stern and rearwards at the bow)?

From memory, the bulkhead brackets remained vertical and did not change with the sheer.

I have no local steam tug to look at, but have been looking at wooden trawlers in hobart harbour today- they have stanchions/ brackets following the sheer.

So confused!

You may have found a local anomaly there or a design peculiar to the Hobart fishing trade. I have racked my brain such as it is but would still put money on the brackets being vertical to the keel and thus parallel with the hull framing.
