Planet t7 fail safe
« on: April 27, 2014, 05:51:59 pm »

I have a planet T7 which I have swopped to mode 1.  I have replaced the ratchet on left stick to a spring.
The instructions suggest that the throttle channel can be programmed to fail safe, but that channels 2, 3 and 4 all fail to the neutral position in the event of signal loss.
Whilst sailing this morning this was definitely not the case, and the loss of signal resulted in channel 3 and 4 (my throttle and steering) being set to last position
I have read previous threads and this would seem to be the position adopted for R6M , ie last best position, but my instruction booklet for R7M definitely says neutral fail
Has anyone any ideas? Can the T7 fail safe modes be changed?

Just thought I'd post the answer in case anyone else has same issue - got a reply from the distributors (J Perkins) this morning

Hi Ian
The planet radio RX's are designed to fail safe on the throttle channel, and hold on the remainder of the channels. Though I can see in the Manual page 8 that it says "return to Neutral". Unfortunately this was a function of the very early versions of Planet radio sets, and unfortunately it looks as though we have not amended the hand book to suit the later sets.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Regards
Geoff

So as you can see - the channels don't fail to neutral. The reason I was using one of these channels instead of the throttle channel was because of the failsafe - as it returns to its lowest setting, and I have the stick centred, it effectively loses reverse. Clearly not an issue for aircraft (which this controller is aimed at) but an issue for boats!!!!

Another point to watch with alleged failsafes is what they are looking for.  A fail to neutral that has been programmed in by the user acting on a loss of signal is one thing, a fail to the factory setting (full reverse) on reawakening after a power "brown out" is another thing altogether.  Just an opinion, but receivers that have a built in fail safe should be avoided like the pestilence that they are.
