I never knew that!
« on: May 20, 2014, 01:20:14 pm »

Just been down to the Post Office to renew my driving licence.

I was expecting to get the old one back for a few days, before the new one turns up (because I think that's how things should be) but the woman behind the desk amazed me by grabbing a pair of scissors and started chopping my part #1 and part #2 into tiny tiny pieces.

"What happens if the police stop me?" I cried, seeing 50% of my ID getting ritually destroyed.

"Drive carefully and they probably won't." she said, smiling.  {-)

Safest thing to cut it up
If you apply to DVLA you send your two parts with the application.
Old licences handed back could  probably be reused after clever
manipulation.
There are enough dodgy licences, passports etc going around

The Post Office lady has my vote :-))

No worries.

The DVLA computer at Swansea knows immediately a policeman asks for a check up. This is the same reason that TAX disks are being phased out later this year. The all seeing eye knows everything.   %) %) %)

I'm still using my paper driving licence, it doesn't expire until I'm 70 - so it's good for another 10 years yet !

I'm not so sure about that. :o
If you google "is a paper driving licence legal" there are numerous sites (including .gov ones) that state they are legal as they normally do not expire until the holder is 70.  Although many recommend you change to a photo ID one now, it is not compulsory.  Evidently the date for a fully phased change over is 2033,

Nothing is simple. Whatever type of licence you have it must show your current address. So if you move you must update your licence details and that now means you'll get a photo one.

A friend had problems in the States years ago with the paper licence. They refused to believe it was a driving licence as it had no picture!

Be warned most EU countries will only accept a photo driving license now.

Also interesting to note
The DVLA quote 3 weeks to change an EU licence to UK and your EU license needs to be sent away.
This causes a problem as in order to drive in the UK with a foreign licence you MUST carry it with you EVERY time you drive.
So basically I cant drive in the UK legally for up to 3 weeks while my licence is at the DVLA.

I hire cars in Europe each year, never had any problems with my old licence. I do carry my passport with me as well of course which has a photo in it and the same address. No problems in New Zealand or USA either in the last couple of years.

Over the years I have reported 2 dumped cars which I have managed to get the council/Police to shift as they were on a public highway as I was able to see that the tax disc was out of date (by some months) how would you be able to report for sure that there was an illegal car on the road .

Photo licenses have to be renewed every 10 years, apparently a persons looks change over time so they need to update the photo- note they don't say its because they can charge you 15 quid for doing so! A nice little earner for the government over the old original  one per lifetime paper types.

Also before disposing of the old one, make a photocopy of the paper part that contains all your categories of driving. I know of many cases where new licenses have arrived with full motorcycle or HGV or PCV categories have been replaced with provisional entitlement. Obviously a cock up at DVLA. However its a cock up they refuse to accept and its up to you to prove you have passed the tests!

Just hired a car in deepest Greece an hour ago and they just copied the name and number off my old paper licence and didn't even look at my passport. At the end of the week I just leave it in the hotel car park with the key under the filler cap! I shall of course photograph it fully first.
