CITY OF ADELAIDE/CARRICK
« on: September 20, 2013, 09:42:24 pm »

She's on her way, finally, via Chatham and on to Australia for restoration........has taken some years and mucho mullah to get her this far, but finally this old venerable ship is finally on her way to the City of her namesake to be restored.
I hope and pray that they have fine weather and good fortune on their very long and hazardous voyage.
she is being towed on the first part of her voyage to Chatham by the tug Dutch Pioneer.........can be tracked on Ships AIS here....just north of Stranraer at the moment heading south in the North Channel between N Ireland and Mull of Galloway.

Even the Aussies don't have the money for "restoration". As they state, they are aiming to "preserve" her and prevent further deterioration. If she was restored, you would end up with a replica rather than the original vessel.
Her destination is Greenwich where she is expected to lay-over near the Cutty Sark for a couple of weeks before being transferred to a heavy-lift vessel for passage to Adelaide.

Where is she now ?  I see the tug is home in Dordrecht , Holland.  Some great videos on  youtube of the barge and tugs leaving Irvine Harbour for the trip south.  An impressive sight , worthy of a unique model version.

Lying in Chatham Docks. Move to Greenwich TBA. The Australian project Group are selling tickets at £25/head for a renaming ceremony at Greenwich on 18th October attended by the Chookie Embra. http://cityofadelaide.org.au/our-news/our-news-articles/107-2013-news/812-renaming-ceremony.html

Interesting...I find very little in the Australian media about this work  :o ........Derek
"On a somewhat rainy day on Saturday 7th September , here we see the Clipper 'City of Adelaide' (AKA Carrick - of Glasgow) sitting tall onboard the Dutch barge 'Lastdrager 28' awaiting her final departure from the normally quiet port of Irvine after spending 22 years ashore under the custody of the Scottish Maritime Museum. She will make for London then on to Chatham ready for her 8-week voyage onboard a heavy-lift ship to Adelaide in Australia , where she will be further preserved but not restored. She has spent over 50 years of her long life in and around  Firth of Clyde waters , sinking twice alongside in Glasgow City Centre. The tall ship was officially handed over with ceremony to her new Australian owners on 6th September 2013".

Not quite there yet. Transport to Australia depends on Australian Government funding and the recent change of political administration has thrown a spanner in the works. The old Government agreed to fund the scheme but neglected to sign the cheque before leaving office. The new Government is "reviewing" matters and has yet to come to a decision. Thus, CoA will probably be renamed at Greenwich as planned but will then return to Chatham to await a decision from Australia. There is also the point that there is not a queue of heavy-lift vessels waiting on a contract to transport the CoA and any move to Australia will depend on availability and the charter rate. Thus the countdown on the CoA website   http://cityofadelaide.org.au   is rather optimistic.
She could yet end up in Sunderland.....

The Federal Government has confirmed that the funds will be released on the basis that the CoA Trust makes no further call for Government support.
The next row is over the location in Adelaide as the civil authorities have allocated a backwater spot while the Trust (understandably) wants a site next to the existing maritime museum.
She will now go downstream for "shrink wrapping and fumigation" for "some months". Why the lengthy delay is unclear but there does not appear to be any charter agreed for a heavy-lift vessel.

It's rather odd but, since CoA's arrival at Adelaide in February, the Project Group website http://cityofadelaide.org.au/  has had almost nothing to add to the saga. Searching on 'City of Adelaide Clipper' does throw up more info and Wikipedia has an accurate record at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Adelaide_(1864)  It’s all gone rather quiet.

at least she got there safe and sound..was worried about how she'd fare in the Southern Ocean.......but things take time, and it's a decent climate all year round down Adelaide way so she won't rot with excessive rain lashing her like up in Irvine, lol
