Camera housings...
« on: June 09, 2014, 01:27:04 pm »

Chaps, the Akula build is going nicely, just about to start on fitting out the cylinder. I'd like to be able to use my old faithful 808 key fob camera on it, so I'm needing some ideas as to constructing a watertight housing for it.

Main criteria are:
(a) Must be dead simple to build with the bare minimum of tools.
(b) No machining of seals or locking rings, etc.

(c) Needs to be constructed of easy to acquire materials.
(d) Needs to be easy to install and remove, and preferably deck mounted.
(e) And finally...needs to be 100% watertight.

All ideas gratefully received...

Knowing what I do about submarines and water tightness, having built Ron Perrott's HMS Resolution and sunk it on it's first sortie with loss of all on board, I know one thing............don't think there's such a thing in my vocabulary as "being watertight" {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

so back to the boffins on this one {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

As regards the tic tac box, just strip the label off, make a suitable slide in/out mounting, gut out a hole at the bottom  say 5mm then insert and seal  a piece of clear plastic using sealent. where the on off button is either put a small ball bearing or such on it so you can press to turn on/off.. then electric tape to seal of the open side back with the tic slot bit.  I would be very surprised if it leaked and have seen some great vids using this technique , in fact sure it was someone at the New Brighton pond who I got this off.   :-))

My version (which I'm afraid, bar the final two points doesn't fulfill your requirements). Streamlined with about a 4:1 aspect ratio (not perfect but better than a cylinder or box). GRP construction with a machined aluminium bayonet ring and acrylic front lens bonded in with acrylic glue. Displaces about 80 grams, so plenty of allowance for larger batteries and ballast if you want to stabilize it for towing behind the boat.

If you want a really simple soultion, here is one idea- use a balloon.

The neck of the balloon can be sealed with a small acrylic disc for the lens to poke through.

The disc should held onto the front of the 808 with a bit of silicone rubber or hot glue to keep it located. The natural elasticity of the balloon should keep the neck in place provided you size the lens adequately to provide a bit of stretch.

Yes, you can get a standard box or a larger 1, the larger one is the one I have as the camera fits better

Thanks for the ideas guys...I'm liking the Tic Tac box idea, meets all my criteria. Looks like my carer is off to the sweetie shop tomorrow...

Andy..balloons? That's as bad as my old idea of using condoms as part of a sub ballast system. (got me into trouble with 'er that was indoors, that one...)   :embarrassed:

I fail to see what the problem is. A balloon is an elastic membrane that will protect the camera well.

You can get 32mm push fit couplers in DIY stores like B&Q and Homebase. They cost a couple of quid and have an o-ring gland at each end.

One end you can use with a blanking plug as an endcap allowing access to the compartment. The other end can be trimmed back and an acrylic lens bonded on. Or you could leave the o-ring fitting on the other end, and use a second blanking plugged hollowed out for a lens to be glued across. That would make both ends accessible.

A final refinement would be to whittle a streamlined tail at the back, which could be whittled from foam or well waterproofed wood.

Not as swish as the custom GRP item, but a very sturdy housing that should be reliably watertight at a cost of about three quid, and can be made with simple handtools.

Now that sounds like a plan...I'll investigate those further.

Thanks Andy,
