Yellowing Varnish
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:41:23 pm »

Hi guys...its been a while now, well 3 yrs to be exact. (where has the time gone?)
Anyway I've just got Cardiff out of the loft with an urge to get her afloat again, shes in quite good nick considering. The only thing is that the varnish has "yellowed" so apart from pulling her apart and re-doing the paintwork, has a magic solution been invented or an easier way of removing the offending varnish since I last visited these pages?
regards
Phil

Deep joy...could be a work in progress as I try and drum up some enthusiasm then.

So is it just a matter of a bit of wet and dry then repaint and then reapply the varnish?.

If you are using paint then varnish should not normally be necessary unless you want a matt or satin finish in which case Ronseal Polyurethane Interior Varnish is the stuff to use as it goes on over just about anything. (The exterior variety has UV filters which give a slight tint). However, ANY varnish applied over white paint will tend to show a degree of discolouration so in that case use the correct sheen of white from the start.

As Dave says, there is no easy way back from a yellowed finish apart from recoating and yes, I do appreciate that this would be a very fiddly process on a 1/96 scale model.
