Mystery Icon in System Tray
« on: June 18, 2014, 10:38:33 am »

Anybody body know what this icon is connected with ? - see pics below
It has mysteriously appeared in my XP System Tray or 'Notification Area' -  >>:-(
it does not respond with a pop-up label when the mouse pointer is placed on it
or apparently run any specific program. Alternatively does anybody know of a
method of searching for matching images as Google does with text?

The icons from left to right are AVG Antivirus, Local Area Connection, Webshots,
Safely Remove Hardware, and the Unknown Icon.

Have you run the usual scans for a virus.  ?

I've just re-examined it Ken, and following your suggestion I think it
may be an earth symbol with a lower case 'e' at the lower right-hand side -
? bit like ?internet explorer? perhaps

I did, when I couldn't see a pop-up text box after I'd put the mouse pointer on it.

Nothing (apparently!) happened

a bit of "Praise the Lord and trust in the Anti-Virus Software"!

Panic Over ! :-)) - I have found out what it is . . . see pic below

I use a Utility program - Glary Utilities PRO - it updated itself yesterday
and as part of that, it seems to have installed a new self update checking program.

I am assuming it is new since something similar must have been running
before but didn't show up in the tray.

Choice is : to live with it showing in the tray, or perhaps see if there is a
'No Display' option that can be set.

(AVG Antivirus scan showed no problems as you might expect)

I've had a look and it's a registry checker so they know all about weaving in and out of your machine.  As long as you trust then then it should be alright.  i used to play with the registry when I had XP but those days are gone now with windows 7

Thanks for keeping us posted.

Ken

Did you migrate from XP to Windows 7 successfully ? , or just buy a new machine and copy across all your data files?

I ask because I am thinking about taking the plunge and moving to Win 8, I have a dual core processor, 16GB
of system RAM (I play about with Ubuntu from time to time) and a 1 Terabyte Hard Disc, so I am not really in
the market for a new machine just yet!.

I took an easier solution to updating from xp, mine sort of 'dual boots', when i say sort of - what I did was left the original hardrive in the pc and fitted a new seagate hard drive - like having a seperate drive, I then installed windows 7, when it asked, I installed to the new seagate disk, now on start up I get asked win7 or earlier, so I can go to the old disk and run xp professional without interfering with the xp and vice versa, only issue was having the antivirus on the xp as McAfee (paying for it so may as well use it), it allows me to run the old software that wont or is incapable of being loaded onto win7, I run MSE on the win7 so there is no compatibility issues there.

I like glarysoft to a point it cleaned a lot of issues and marginally speeded up the pc - but - on a computer forum they vilified the problems that a registry cleaner can cause - so removed it - its a pity that there is not a simple way to fix computers without having a degree and a modicom of common sense (me personally - DOH!!!!  {-) )

Hi Richard.

I had no choice. My XP machine caught fire due to dust and cakes crumbs blocking the vents.  I went for new machine with Windows 7 and have never stopped regretting it. All my games and 10 years of stuff won't now work, even when modulated by the new 64 bit design. It really is too clever for it's own good.  i believe Windows 8 is even more dedicated and un-workable with loads of problems throwing spanners in the works.   ho hum

I am also thinking of setting up a hard drive loaded with the Xp but not for use on the web, so it should be safe to use in a home conditions.

Cheers

of the 7 machines I regularly run at home 4 are still XP, one is vista and there are 2 windows 7 machines, 2 machines dual boot to ubuntu (linux) one xp machine is purely to host an external hard drive and old laser printer, another sits running but not logged on as a file server - this is also my CAD workstation and gets logged on to do CAD. All of the above are on a hard wire network, and all can be remote desktopped from any of them. to be honest the win7 laptop really only gets used upstairs running sky go to watch tv in bed.

Interesting info about various XP/Win 7 setups.

I can't decide what to go for

Options are : to sit tight and hope that daily updates to AVG fend off
any nasties that may strike XP now that Microsoft no longer support it . . .

or get some sort of new PC running win 8 and use it to handle internet
& email traffic, keeping the XP machine networked to it, but protected from any
net problems.

I have run the Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe program from Microsoft and
it reckoned that just about all the software I use is 'compatible' although I'll
believe that when I see it!

by what you have said - even home conditions are unsafe - should have a sign - NIL BY VENT  {-)

I hoover mine about twice a year and clean the "filters" I fitted over the fans (added an extra fan to compensate for the loss due to resistance of the filters - clean wipes rubber banded over the discharge into the machine).

I haven't had problems with win7, in fact I am amazed at how fast it is, though the software for it is mostly new, I use the XP for those that would not run or the settings would mean starting from scratch again - I currently have a scanner 'ARTEC' that I am using and that will only work on the XP. Overall I am quite happy with the setup and would recommend it to anyone - my reason was to 'recycle' the hardware as it was for the most - compatible saving about £400.00 in the process i.e. £50 for the win7, £50 for the hard drive, £40 for the MS Office.

@ Essex

i don't want XP anywhere near the Web connected Win 7 and it's broadband connection. I have a new XP disk from the shop but going on my memory, I might have to log in once  (and once only)  to verify the new installation.  Hopefully, after that, I need not put it on the web again.  %)

Good job I didn't sling the old disks, as advised by  'she who must be obeyed' so that I can re-live the old days once again. Mind you, the past is never so good when revisited as you might think.   %)

Cheers
