Yet another new build Springer!
« on: June 25, 2014, 06:23:05 am »

Hi Folks...

I have hung around and asked a few questions and now I've made a start on my daughters Springer.....

This is the first proper build I've done in a long time as everything else so far has been composite hulls....

anyway, in just a few hours, I had marked out and cut all of the parts for the hull and if I had more time I think I could build one of these little beauties and get it in the water in two or three day... nice a simple!  :-))

That's where she is right now... I've got this far with parts I had laying about apart from the batteries

Lets see IF I get any time this week....???

Well done Dave ok2........I am sure your daughter will love her 'Springer'..... will you paint it PINK for her?

Just one question.......the 'rules & regs' for Springers have not made it to our shores in OZ  %) ....but are water cooled motors allowed in UK for this series of craft?  {-)

Thanks Derek...

PINK???I was thinking of doing it a Hello Kitty theme! ;)  But no! I chickened out there!
I will do it a basic looking, non-original build but I'm sure she will have bags of fun running it...  :}

As for the rules and Reg's... I'm not planning of running any comp's but, I also don't think the cooling will be necessary???

Hi,
I do have a couple of questions (at the risk of looking stupid)  :embarrassed:

Firstly, I am following the plans by Ken Reilly but, Even though I am fitting the exact batteries as detailed on the drawing, Do I run it 6V or 12V?

Secondly, (and this is the real stupid one...)

What do I use the seal and paint the wooden hull???

Please bear in mind I haven't built a wooden boat for maybe 20 years or so.....

Thank you in advance for any friendly banter about to be bestowed upon me!  {-)

Hi
   I've nearly finished building one for my granddaughter, and you'll have guest It's PINK. Now to get back to yours, I sanded mine down, then I gave it three coats of sand sealer, sand down between coats, gray primer, under coat, then gloss. It sounds a lot, but if you don't the grain shows. I hope this helps you. By the way she looks great.

Ok,

I got a little work done ahead of another very busy weekend...  {:-{

I sanded the sides of the joints and stared to fill some small gaps...

I also fitted the rudder and skeg...

I know... the rudder looks rubbish but I did say, I'm mostly building this out of my parts bin! ;-)

I am hoping to get the deck on this weekend and maybe get some of the top done???

I have always run my springers on 6volt, so wire the batteries in parallel this gives good running time. You do not need high speed, because all you will get is a submarine. Do not forget to put a coaming around the access holes in the deck, you will need them. I usually make mine about 20 - 25mm high

 Also, it's worth tapering / rounding off the rear end of your skeg to allow for smother water flow....

 :-))  Got it  :-))

I have to go out for some filler and other stuff today...

Once the filler is done, I will shape the skeg.
I also need to make some knees before I can put the deck on....  :-))

I must say, this is a fun build!  :}

Well... Even though I had a long list of jobs to do, I put them off to get some work done on the springer!
I made the basis for the knees and fitted the deck....

Then, I cut the access hole but soon realised the rudder was stuck!  {:-{

So, I had to cut a second hole over the rudder and made a cover for that...

Hi everyone....

Is the 18" X 8" Springer to a specific scale?

If so, What is it? I only want to know so I can design my super structure and any fittings I might use...

Thank you!  :-))

Thank you arrow5!

"Run wild"? Oh no... Some of the Springers are amazing... like Red October!, Umi's build and so on....

I think this one will be very run of the mill by their standards!  :D

I have seen some great builds on here and this is not that good but thanks!

Ok, I guess I'll have to draw things up and see what happens....

I have almost finished the knees and the coaming so it's getting there... :-)

Well.... I have made a little progress...

After sealing and sanding, and sealing, and sanding, and sealing, and.... I think you get the idea....

...the  hull is now silky smooth and almost ready for paint...

I have also made a start on the super structure... I was going to follow the design of the SAR boat above but I think it looks better this way round????

Getting there.  :-)

And some more work going on today....

I'm acutally supprised how it seems to be coming together naturally...  :-)

The details are a pain but I'm loving it none the less!  :D

... and a view of inside the wheel house...

As ever, please do give any advice where needed...  :embarrassed:
