OK what primer have you used

Dave

The sealer is Shellac and the primer is normal auto paint from a rattle can....

Yesterday, I rubbed it all down (in the areas of concern) and re-primed it. Now it looks fine.

I think I just put too much on too soon...

They are different paints that I use of my fast composite hulls.... for these I use 2K paints from Specialist Paints....

As long as the primer wasn't a lacquer base, you should be fine.  Lacquer thinners will dissolve shellac.

Ah! Thank you... I didn't know that! The 2K wouldn't be good then!
It's seems fine now so I'm happy!  ;)

I have read Stavro's paint tip thread, and it is excellent.  I used to work in the automotive paint industry (briefly), and I think if you follow his advise, you won't go wrong.

There are times when you can get away from doing things properly, but there is always an inherent risk things will go south, in which case you will have to sand everything off, and start again.  But Stavros lays everything out nice and simple, proper procedures, etc., and is what I normally do.

I don't remember him mentioning shellac.  Shellac is a very interesting finish.  It is, in essence an excretion from a Lac bug dissolved in alcohol.  It naturally contains wax, which is what gives it that amber colour.  White shellac has had the wax mostly removed.

It is surprisingly water resistant, but doesn't resist heat well.  Note I said water resistant and not water proof.  The US Navy used to use it to seal teak on there ships before applying a long oil based varnish.  The amber hue warms the tones of the wood nicely.  I don't use this method on any exterior brightwork, but have used it on furniture before.

It is a good barrier coat, one of the few that can seal a surface contaminated with silicone.  However lacquer thinners will disolve the finish, best not used under lacquer.  I believe the thinners in 2 part paint will probably dissolve the shellac as well.  I am also lead to believe that single part polyurethane finishes don't adhere well either due to the wax found naturally in the shellac.

Thank you for the info Bob AND Stavros!
I am however way too deep...

I think that lady luck might be on my side...

Yesterday, I got as far as priming the hull and the superstructure and getting the white base on the later.
This evening, I painted the hull and got some further work done to the top.

I think it's turning out ok???

I really do appreciate your help and advice but on this occasion, I jumped the gun and maybe got away with it???

What do you think so far???

BTW, I did know about the poo, poo from the little bugs but this time, logic has failed me!  %)

It looks great.  If it has bonded well, it should be fine, like I say you can get away with things sometimes, but not always.  Which is why I like Stavros write-up so much.  Follow it, and it will work.

The excretion isn't actually poo poo, it is something the female lac bug produces.  I don't know enough about bugs to know what its for, just that it is used for shellac.

1 thing I forgot to mention about shellac, and it very well could be common knowledge but will add it just incase, it comes in 2 forms.  Pre-mixed in a can, and in flakes you dissolve in ethanol your self.  Once mixed (and this includes pre-mixed in cans) it has a shelf life, if memory serves me correct, about 18 months.  However, it degrades with time after mixing.  If it has expired, it will dry to a goo like consistency, and you will have to clean it off with solvents (either alcohol or lacquer thinners).  The flakes last a long time, perhaps indefinitely. If you plan on using shellac frequently, you are better off buying it in flake form.  Mixture ratios can be found online.  They are measured by weight, ie a 1 pound cut, 2 pound cut, etc.  use the purest form of ethanol you can find, as the more water in the ethanol the less waterproof the finish.  Sanding isn't necessary between coats for adhesion, as the new coat will chemically bond with the existing coat.  Sanding between coats is useful for maintaining a smoother finish though.

Probably more than you wanted to ever know about shellac.

Thanks again my Canadian friend!
Yes, that is way more than I ever needed to know! Lol...

After all of this, I will quit using Shellac and get to the "Stavros method"!

I only used it as a guy at work suggested it, he uses it to seal fishing floats...

It really sucks that when you put your heart into building something even as simple as a springer, you end up making a crap job on the paint....

I have a boat in my loft half way through paint as I was too scared to finish it!

Anyway, it's time to eat....

I'll get back to it tomorrow...  :-))

You would have been ok to put 2 pack paint over shellac you can even got over enamels with it as long as you DO NOT put the initial coats on to thick........Halfords and other aerosols over enamels ===REACTION
Enamel over Acrylics ====NO problem

Stavros, I must look up your guide!

Unfortunately, in my rush to complete this little tug, I have completely screwed it up! <:( <:( <:(

I spent hrs masking and so on but I still managed to let the pain creep under the tape! I almost give up!

I am not happy at all!  :((

I am going to leave it now and take it along on our hol's to the Isle of Wight.

When we get back, I will probably go round it with a brush and clean up all of the edges....

Hi guys... Thank you for the input....
Stavros, I did use 3M line tape, It's been fine on my composite hulls but I think I will do as waspite sugested and paint over using my steady hand and a very small brush... I know, I've not done it properly as I have rushed things and not taken so much care....

Not to worry now though, I am going on holiday tomorrow and taking the Springer along... My daughter will be at the helm and I will post up a video soon....

I will also upday on the paint fix and any detail updates she gets....

Thanks again for your help, encouragement and advice.... Happy sailing folks!

P.s. I'm going to absorbe your guide Stavros! Thank you all!

Hi Dave
I've very much enjoyed reading this build log, your too self critical mate, you've done a cracking job and build one of best scratch springers I've seen.  :-))
I'm of to the Isle of Wight next month, I dare not take a boat with me SWMBO thinks I spend too much time on them as it is.  %)

Going shopping or building a boat,  now just let me think about that  %%

Hey Joe!

I am more than happy about the build itself and thank you so much for the comment but there are some awesome builds here!
I am just very peeved about the paint.... it's been off par from the start!  {:-{

Believe me, I will definitely learn from this and improve from here on....

So, The trailer is loaded (we're camping) and the models are charged and loaded... Just gotta go to work for the morning and we're off for two weeks!  :}

BTW, Shame we're going to miss each other! it would be good to meet another Mayhemer!

Hi Folks!

Well,
that was a well deserved break!, if shorter than I would like!!!

The weather was up and down but as usual (and as it was a family holiday) I didn't spend that much time playing with the springer...

She did, have her maiden voyage though!  :}

I had my wife take some pictures on her phone and I will post them up soon...

She is slow but looks great on the water! turns nicely and runs just as I would like..

I did find at least one problem...

It has almost no reverse performance...??? Any thoughts on this???

Hi Dave, When you say performance are you talking about speed or steerage, if it's the later very few standard rudder boats answer the helm whilst going astern ;D

Hi Joe,

The speed going astern is almost nothing... the rev's are there but it doesn't stop or drive astern well at all...

I will post some more pictures up and maybe a video???
