What do you enjoy most?
« on: February 03, 2020, 06:50:47 pm »

I'm curious about what members here think: do you get more pleasure from the constructing or the operating?
I have 2 projects semi on-the-go: my first electric model boat from 40yrs ago (needs major update/restoration), and an IOM yacht I bought 5 yrs ago (my current focus, and also needs updates, which I'm tackling now).
I've also recently been tempted by building a Thimble or a Zing Ray. (Model Boats articles from my youth.....)
I sailed dinghies for decades and always preferred the focus/purpose of a an actual race over just 'sailing up and down'.
I enjoy engineering solutions to problems, and constructing - i.e. the technical challenges.
Just interested in how others approach their hobby.
:)

Much that I enjoy the lazy afternoons playing boats in good company, I prefer the time spent building, thinking about building and tinkering in my workshop(s). I have three now.
The same goes with model flying, great to get out and crash them occasionally but much more fun building.

I enjoy the most making all the fiddly bits for a scratch build.  I know that spending weeks making a winch or davits when they can be shop bought for a few quid just doesn't make a lot of sense , but  they will be the only ones around that look like that.

Reminds me of the chap who was asked what he most enjoyed about full size sailing.

His response: 'Talking about it in the pub afterwards....'

Hi, I can echo Colin on this.  Having come back on Sunday from a sail from Sydney Harbour to Woy Woy, we had excitement seconds before arriving at our jetty.  Picked up a 50 foot length of mooring line wrapped around the prop.  My son quickly got the big jib out and we tacked into the middle of the water and then sailed onto the jetty.  I only had to throw a loop around the mooring pole.
If we had drifted backwards after 15 mins we would have been jammed under the Rip Bridge as the mast is too tall to go under.  And fending off an 8 ton boat from others is just not on.
Nice one for the pub afterwards though!

Personally, I most enjoy the fine detailing towards the end of a build, whilst looking forward the maiden voyage amongst friends at the lake.

Definitely the research into something different, possibly totally impractical, but worth the challenge %%

Yep, I'm enjoying the engineering challenges (more fun than engineering for a living lol). The IOM needs a bit of refurb and updating, but I'm looking at solutions for improving what I have in a sensible way. It's 'good enough for my talent' so why spend a fortune rather than resurrect. It's only a metre of wood, but why not rejuvenate what's already there? I'm old, from a 'make do and mend' era/childhood - and tbh I prefer doing that anyway.  :-)   The Dremel is coming out this weekend...  %%

I know I'll get battered when try to race, but what the hell - it'll be my own work in it!

Good question right across the hobby disciplines!

Answer is, it depends on how Im feeling and the weather! Sometimes, I find building hard going and tedious. When I have solutions to issues, I enjoy it. When Im not enjoying build, I enjoy getting out sailing or flying!
