Topic: help with steam engine (Read 4589 times)

Hi
I don't know if anyone can help me. I am a longtime aeroplane modeller and recently into boats. I have just about finished my first boat and I have just bought my next project, which is a steam tug. I bought the boat part built and it needs a full strip down and rebuild. As part of this, the boat did come with a home build steam engine. I have to confess that I am a little out of my depth with the engine and wondered if there is anyone who can help me work it out?

I have attached a pic of the boat which also has the engine. I will try and attach a few more pics of the engine. I am also trying to identify the boat, as I will be rebuilding the boat as well.

do you know anything about the boiler? what it made from, what its soldered with and if its been hydraulic tested?

A puzzle. Is this a V-twin piston valved double actor with a gear driven feed pump between the cylinders? It's not a wobbler, but why are the cylinders different? Is it a compound? Is there a controller, or does it just let rip?
The boiler appears to be a twin drum water tube boiler but where does the fire go?
The hull looks like a planing type and the flywheel has a chord groove around it. Maybe some sort of high speed steam launch. Someone knows.
Still puzzled.

I am hoping someone can help me. I would love someone to give me a hand to see if the engine can run. Although, for the size of boat, it will need some sort of throttle and reverse control. I cannot see how it can be controlled on the engine.

That's also opened the door for a whole load of different engine parts

The STDB cylinder has eight sets of round head screws & nuts top & bottom securing the caps to the barrel flanges
The PORT cylinder has what appear to be six long cheese head screws from the top of the top cap down through the cylinder barrel to the bottom cap & terminated with nuts.......

I wonder which was the original version?...........Derek

Like Jerry, I read it as being a compound.

The exhaust from the Right-hand cylinder is re-heated before entering the Left-hand cylinder, and its larger-bore possibly doesn't leave enough room for screws-and-nuts.

It looks as though the single valve atop the boiler passes steam to (probably) a drier tube or even that coil in the "funnel", hence the string-insulation on the main steam-line to the engine.

I just wanted to thank everyone for there help. I have just bought a Robbe Odin and am thinking I may sell the steam boat as I think the Odin will take some time to build lol.

As a thought I wounder if the boiler is "flash steam" given the multiple tubes (continuious tube) visible in the boiler and the engine driven water pump?

If it's flash steam I think you don't require a pressure test certificate.

I suspect one of the pistons has been replaced hence the different cylinder design?

Such being the case it may originally have come out of a flash steam hydro?
