Rob, I use VSO Light Image Resizer to resize photos for use on the forum, it's available free here
http://www.obviousidea.com/windows-software/light-image-resizer/
It's very easy to use and you can select any output size you like. You can have a up to 10 images per post with a maximum size of 300 Kb each, and a total size of 3000 Kb. I normally set image dimensions of 800 x 600, with an output size of 160 Kb, but you are able to choose whatever you want. It really is simple to use and is a very useful piece of software, best of all - it's free
I hope this helps,
Peter.
