Clff top Tram Car
« on: July 17, 2014, 02:06:09 pm »

I'm thinking about building a model Cliff Tram car, I can make
the sheaves and all the mechanical parts etc. but I need some help
with a circuit and components in order to reverse the travel of the cars after
each journey, operating in an Automatic mode, rather than me switching a DPDT
switch each time.?
Any help would be much appreciated.....
Thanks...

Hi,  can,t you run them on a loop system?  Like the ones in the Where Eagles Dare film.

Have a search in model train electronics. Common item there.

I always thought Faller did a cliff railway system, but cant find anything on it, might of been another German make?

I have a CML shuttle system and I think it's 4 sensors from my train days if your interested? just make me an offer if you are.
It's this one....

Thanks for offering that controller Ian, I think it may be a tad too much for me
and this project!
It has jogged my memory that I might have a Gauge master unit, like the one shown in previous post,
if I can find it.
I am however looking to run this on a 6v solar panel (didn't mention this initially).
I fear that the Gaugemaster might require more than 6v though......

Thanks for the help....

I thought LGB, or one of the G-scale train manufacturers made an aerial tram.

I only found this though...

I found a photo.  %)

That's interesting Umi and a nice find in connection with my post!
A loop system would be a feasible alternative too but that seems more appropriate with a
ski lift type application...
Thanks.

simple push buttons operating a relay would probably do the job, I'll try and figure a circuit.

What about using water and a pump a la the Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway?

http://www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/how-it-works/

A trip valve to empty the water at the bottom station and a diverted fill spout operated as the wire changes direction, so that the water is trickling down the track with the up car, to fill its tank at top limit.
A weight controlled overcenter chock to make the top car wait til the tank is full, before releasing it.

Just an electric water pump to run..... if I only had time!!

Go for it N

you need the relay latching circuit here - http://www.eleinmec.com/figures/024_03.gif
combined with this for switching forward and reverse http://www.homebuiltrovs.com/howtorelays.html
the first circuit basically takes the pushbutton inputs and for one position sends out a latched output for the relay controlling forward and reverse, when the other pushbutton is pressed the circuit deactivates the relay, and it drops back ito its deactivated state (where the motor runs the other way), the forward / reverse control can be done on a relay with a twin set of contacts (normally open, normally closed and common, the motor being connected to the common, positive goes to one normally open and the opposite normally closed, negative to the first normally closed and the opposite normally open. thus when the relay is not activated the motor runs one way, when it is activated it runs the other way. the first circuit provides this activation / deactivation via 2 push buttons.

But you need a delay at each end to let people get on and off.

I don't think a loop system would work with a cliff tram - really only works with simpler suspended types of cable car; like ski-lifts and amusement rides (Alton Towers one is such).

Incidentally the 'Where Eagles Dare' cable cars weren't/aren't operated as a loop - the cable was/is a loop but the cars never travel round the end pulleys.

Yes, a loop system is not what I had in mind, just a simple up and down
journey.
Maybe not so simple!
Thanks everyone. Goodnight.

The railroad tram accessory are not looped. there is a switch at one end, so that
when either car reaches that end of travel, then the motor reverses.
A hobby shop up in Seattle had one running in the corner of their store.
That's how I knew something was available commercially.

The correct name for these systems is "funicular" if it is rope/cable operated.  Maybe help with searches.  "Tram" or "tramway" seems to complicate matters with city transport systems, coal mines etc.  www.funimag.com

Good point, but this one seems to be known as a Tramway
Just an idea I had whilst staying in Scarborough. Need a break from boat
building this summer.

Umi's model railway tram accessory idea would work, very simply for that :-))
Make thge model as per the info board you just posted, electric motor on the main wheel, reversing switch at the top.
Bingo, working Tram Cars.

Hello
Langley miniature models make a cliff railway. There ref is F161 price is £139.35 , here is the discription
Contains two coaches, dummy rollers, dummy water filler, cable, and the motor/gearbox and automatic control module. (with reed switchs and magnets) Just requires standard HO track, 12 volt power source to complete (can be made to any length of track).
The lower building was made from F166 Station Building with an adapted roofline.
Unpainted Kit
This unit allows selection of coach running speed and graduated slow down to approaching station speed (also adjustable) and then on the final reed, coach stop. Adjustable time delay, then the coaches reverse direction and slowly accelerate to full speed and the cycle repeats

Bit of a red herring, I fear, but here's a truly spectacular one I have ridden a couple of times:

Yes! Pretty unusual. Didn't think it was in Yorkshire!
I've had some useful replies now so will need to study them to see what
I can manage to wire-up.
Thanks for your link.

That's a thought - was it a railway running on rails on a steep gradient, or a suspended cableway that was intended?
Either way, at whatever size, control would seem to be a natural for a Raspberry PI or similar and an interface board with appropriate sensors looking at the car, or cars, to achieve automatic running.

Its a Tramcar running on guide rails with cables attached to haul and lower each car.
I think I have heard of this 'Raspberry PI' control panel/board.
Can you tell me anymore about its operation and cost?
Thanks..
