I have no large scale boat for my Boat Clubs Navy Day and we have plenty of modern-ish warships, with space at a premium a large scale tall ship would be out of the question-plus it would take me 40 years to build it lol.


So a compromise was undertaken. I like the wooden hulls and the 'pirate' kind of theme, so here is a static model of a small, single masted, inshore armed sloop.


It is plank of frame, and yes as is the way with me it be slightly distressed, rusty bits, weathered cannons, and a crackle glaze to give the paint bobble effect from sun, sea etc. The boat has had a very light weather wash as has the sail.


The figures are not the best but gives the boat some scale.

Glad you like it. The scale is 1/20 and she is based on the Bermuda sloop, these ranged from single to double masted. The military sloops were "xxxxx" and normally two to three masted. Like I said this version is more a armed trader, small, quick at turning and a small crew. She is also assisted by oars when need be.

From where did you get that fearsome crew and what is the approximate height of a figure?, coz I'm looking to press gang a similar bunch for my next project - a 1:16 scale 18th Century Revenue cutter 'Aldebaran'.

The crew are cheap Pirate of the Caribbean knock-offs. I re-painted and highlighted and weathered with washes and filters. They are 3.5 inches high. I am getting some genuine Pirates of the Caribbean figures, bit more flexible and they stand around 3.75 inches so should suit your 1/16 scale Cutter.

The ones in the link are similar. I paid £10 for 4 used so just look out for those. You can have my old set of you want when I get my other ones?
