Help with Matt varnish
« on: July 19, 2014, 10:16:44 pm »

Hi there guys I'm after some help please basically I'm getting close to finishing my puffer build I don't use enamel paint as I don't like it I find it's not as nice to paint with, I'd rather use games workshop or other brands acrylic paint dad doesn't agree but I guess it's a old school/new school thing, but I need to protect the paint and I was hoping to varnish it, games works shop don't do Matt they do a satin but that will ruin the effect I have gone for with the boat, does any one no of a brand of Matt varnish I can spray on the boat that won't effect the acrylic paint thanks in advance guys

Used this for years:

http://www.jacksonsart.com/p1593/AV_Acrylic_Medium:_Aerosol_Acrylic_Spray_Varnish_Matt_400ml_(UK_ONLY)/product_info.html

Vallejo Matt Varnish spray, shake it well and stand the tin in a bowl of warm water before use (is what I do anyhow!).

It umm… dries matt.

It depend how many coats you spray.

I'll spray a couple of light  coats on a model at a time and take it from there. Light coats give a quick drying time and the depth of matting you want. When I get to a reasonable matt and I know the paint is protected I am happy. It can go far if you stick to the above. When you see a wet part in the job its time to stop that area. but it will dry and matt down. Certainly the Humbrol are just as good but I went for the 400 size of can and have been happy so far. My 72 inch KG5 was sprayed in 2001 and still is got good cover.

Bottom line I've just stuck with it as it been good and goes further than the small cans. Value for money yes but the postage is a pain if you can't get to retailer stocking it.
