Springer Tug Hardware - what are people using
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:53:21 pm »

Im renovating my old Springer which I have not used for a couple of years.

Just wondering what motors, speed controllers and size props people are using these days

I'm using a brushless low-kv outrunner with a 6V 7.2Ah SLA battery.

4-blade 40mm standard  Raboesch #147 prop or 4-blade 45mm wide blade Raboesch #174 prop (both have the approx. the same final pitch despite the different diameters).

I could tow xtian29's massive Toy4Tug (4m/300kg+) with the 45mm prop.  I usually sail with the 40mm "narrow blade" prop which gives more than enough thrust for lighter applications. I get almost 4 hours of run time on the 40mm prop.

Thats interesting as I was considering a brushless motor - do you know if they work with 12v lead acid batteries though as I used to use them or 2 x 6v as ballast as well

At 6V I'm using a 800kv motor, which means 4800rpm with no load.

If you want to keep the same speed under 12V you'd obviously need a slower motor, rated for 400kv or lower. Lower kv motors tend to be bigger (at least the cheaper one).
Stuff like this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18170

I you already have two 6v batteries, I would just wire them in parallel and stay at 6V.

Here's more info on my springer:  http://rc.noalia.fr/boats/sequana/
Here's some footage captured from my springer and at the bottom of the page a video of my springer towing xtian29's heavy-lift ship: http://rc.noalia.fr/boats/events/2014-05-bateaux-en-fete

Going to go for the slower outrunner you recommended.

Can you suggest a suitable speed controller to match this one - same fittings preferred

Thanks for your help

Here's the 3542-800KV motor to run under 6V in HobbyKing's UK warehouse:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__29478__Turnigy_Aerodrive_SK3_3542_800kv_Brushless_Outrunner_Motor_UK_Warehouse_.html?strSearch=3542-800

I'm running this car ESC in my Springer:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__29642__Turnigy_TrackStar_1_10th_Scale_60A_Car_ESC_Version_2_UK_Warehouse_.html

Both the motor and ESC come with 3.5mm gold plugs installed. So no soldering on this end. I don't remember what connector the ESC came with on the battery end. I fitted Tamyia plugs but I have now moved to XT60. And it may have come with an XT60 plug installed. I don't remember.

Form my next twin prop springer I'm going to use this even smaller/cheaper ESC:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__28715__Turnigy_TrackStar_25A_1_18th_Scale_Brushless_Car_ESC_UK_Warehouse_.html?strSearch=trackstar

This one also has 3.5mm bullet connectors on the motor end but no connector on the battery end. You have to solder the connector you want.

They both have the same features (except the max current they can handle obviously). Default settings has brake enabled (you first have to reverse to brake, return to neutral and then reverse to actually get reverse) as it comes configured for cars.

This can be disabled for basic forward/reverse operation either through the programming card or through a sequence with the TX. You should also disable LiPo cutoff if you're running a SLA or NIMH battery.

The Raboesch #147 prop is good for general purpose sailing. For heavy towing, Raboesch's #174 gives tremendous thrust while keeping speed down.

Was just tidying up my spares box and found an unopened ESC cant even remember buying it

Would this be any use in this setup as its not doing anything at the moment - I guess I would have to use NiMH instead of 6v lead acid though

This ESC probably lacks a reverse function making it essentially useless on a tug boat (unless you have Voit-Schneider props). Even some marine ESC don't have reverse as they're built for offshore/fast electric applications. Some even come with that bloody brake function and you can't even disable it (doesn't make any sense on a boat !).
Before buying anything, get the user manual to make sure you have reverse and that you can disable any braking feature.

At 7:10 in the first video you can see xtian29's Toy4Tug, the Spirit of Archimedes.

When you scroll down there's footage taken from the Spirit with my springer towing.
