Robbe U-47 foreplanes
« on: July 30, 2014, 05:35:58 pm »

Anybody modded a Robbe U-47 to have functioning foreplanes? If so, any hints as to how it's done?

Imo not worth the effort. lock them into position and use only the rear vanes for control.
Very little to be gained from operational front vanes and a lot of hassle to get them to work.
Just my opinion but really they are not needed.

I did wonder, but 'tis done now Sub...the rear vanes are to be hooked up to a SALCON to keep the boat level once submerged, and the I'll use the front ones to submerge/surface.

Hi.
Thats the way to do it as you have done a rod  out the rear bulkhead.
I have several subs and only 2 do i use the front vanes on .
A type 1x u boat and an akula both do very little to control it and are a pain especially the akula.
The others i just locked them off with a very slight down angle and use the rear ones for both keeping them level and depth change as my levellers can be overuled from the tx.

Cheers Sub...my Akula has operating foreplanes, and now the U-47, but these are the first two boats I've had with working front planes.

I figured it might help the U-47 being a dynamic dive boat...use the foreplanes to dive and then let the leveller (on the rear planes) take over and keep the boat level once it's at the depth I want it to be.

I note with interest the comments on having the front dive planes working. When I built my U47 I removed the mechanical linkage and fitted a further servo to connect up to the linkage. It worked great and allows for dynamic diving get under water in fact at a much slower speed as one could operate both front and rear planes. I subseuquently sold this model but had great fun with this and so did one of my grand kids. It is a shame that Robbe dont make this anymore. I have built several subs mostly OTW but I think I enjoyed U47 best of all. It needs workable front planes though.

Hi.
Working front vanes may well assist a dynamic boat but are not a necessity there are lots of subs out there with no front vanes fitted ie x craft they submerge perfectly without them. most la boats dont have the sail vanes working and are ok.
If you want them working thats a different matter. my old robbe seawolf has never had them working and dynamic dives just fine.
Most front vanes can be a pain in the a-- to set up and maintain water integrety another hole in a pressure hull to worry about especially a model that was never meant to have them working in the first place............. each to their own though.
As long as the builder is happy thats all that matters.

There was an awful lot of bad language floating about when I was adding the working front planes...although they are done now, I still haven't used the boat yet, so I can't comment on what difference there will be...if any.

If you connect the rear dive planes through a leveler Richard when you dive the boat the leveler will controle the rear you control the front planes to try and keep a constant depth along with your dexterity on the throttle with her being dynamic diving
hope that makes sense

Yep, that's exactly how she's set up, Mark...rear planes on the leveller to keep the boat level when she's under, front planes on a slider to get her under and control the depth, and throttle to keep her under once she's submerged. I'm guessing that running at decks awash she won't take much in the way of power to get her to go under...we shall soon find out.   ;D

The lower she is mate the easier she will go down you wont need to much thrust and just a light touch of the fingers will get her fully wet right to the tip of the orange flag  mate .

That orange flag thing is long gone, Mark...the piece of brass wire it was attached to is now part of the foreplane linkage. I recycled it...  ;D

I plan to have her sit with the decks completely awash when she's on the surface, just a little sniff of power should then be plenty to get her under.

I have a nice new periscope set for her as well as all new deck guns, the main 'scope will be on a float so I'll have something to see when cruising at six inches below surface.
