Two Thornycroft motor boats together

Hi everyone


In preparation for sailing tomorrow, we've loaded these two in to the van for sailing together. The grey one is our CMB 216 seen in the build thread on this forum but the black hulled one is a rarity.


In 1926 the RAF ordered six boats from Thornycroft to replace the converted CMBs given to them in 1919 by the Royal Navy. These new boats were designated Fast Motor Boats and were designed for range safety, target towing and Air Sea Rescue work, therefore they were the first launches to be used for Air Sea Rescue. We had to use the NMM to find the original plans and built it to 1/12 scale like the CMB so two vessels of similar types but separated by 15 years in design. The CMB is 55inches long whilst the FMB is 62inches long, both powered by the same motors, propellers, and ESCs. But we've never had them on the water together so watch this space tomorrow for the results :-))

Many thanks, I think it should be master builders! Or perhaps together we could be one master modeller as Dad is the hull builder and I'm the superstructure constructor. I can only take credit with the FMB from the deck upwards, Dad made the entire CMB by himself because I forced him to build an entire model from scratch. To be fair he has challenged me to build a hull from scratch too!
The FMB was our fourth model we built together, Dad building the hull and me adding the deck and constructing the superstructure. We are placing bets which one will be faster!

If all was equal in the building and fitting of the drive train and superstructure then, as the Rescue launch looks like she has been gloss varnished, I reckon she will be a touch faster.

Are you going to put these up on Youtube?

My money is on the CMB for straight line speed thanks to the stepped hull.
May lose out in the turns for the same reason though.  {:-{

I'd give 216 the edge.............narrower beam, deeper V to cut through the water, less drag............go for it..............I look forward to the video.................beautiful models. neil. :-))

Due to unforeseen events on Sunday with the popularity of the Dragon boat racing on Wickies main lake the boats will take their run together on this Saturday coming.


Their are several other things you should know about the FMB.


What you can't see in the picture is the size of deadwood on the keel and the tiny single rudder! But with the rudders on the CMB are not very big either but both are non balanced types so it will be interesting to see if they can out turn each other in any way!


Hopefully once I've mastered the camera shots for a video they'll be on YouTube for all the see, fingers crossed! ;)


Many thanks for the comments, the FMB was our first decent finish model as a result of your three earlier models which we have retrofitted to finished to the newer standards of the FMB. Well two of them are! The third is still under rebuild. :D
