MTRONIKS

WELL DONE MTRONIKS!  :-))

I have had several Mtroniks ESCs over the past couple of years (I couldn't get hold of any "Bob's Boards"),  :embarrassed: and all worked fine until I took out my Club 500 a couple of weeks ago when I couldn't get reverse.

I tried re-setting it up again and through trial and error with other ESCs etc, found it was the Club 500's ESC that was at fault.  I only bought it around March this year but didn't retain the receipt.

I phoned Mtroniks and a guy there asked me to send it in so they could run tests on it (postage was only 95p or so first class so no problem there).

I did so about 5 days ago and lo and behold, on the doormat when I got home today was a brand new Viper Marine 25!!!

No excuses.  No "we don't normally do this without a receipt sir". No nothing.
Just a brand new ESC.

How's that for customer service? ..... second to none in my book.

(Just wanted to share that I'm dead chuffed and give Mtroniks a pat on the back).

They take a bit of flak from some on here
but I have had nowt but excellent service
from them.
They also sell the units they pick out for testing
at a discount still with warranty and free postage.
Look on the website.
Usual disclaimers, just a very satisfied customer.

Neither have I, and I have about 10 of them. I have found them to be excellent units O0

Regards to all.

Peter.
I have two Mtronik ESC's (Viper 20 & 25) and BOTH whine whilst at idle. It is not possible to trim out this condition on either unit. Both work well but the whine is a bit off putting.
Any advice?

Hi, Please let me know which Radio set that you are using as it sounds like they may be 2.4gig which are not set up completely.

The whine will most likely be coming from the motors.
The frequency at which an ESC pulses will sometimes resonate with the motor windings.

I have just installed my Mtronix 20 amp in my tug.

Yes it did whine when at rest but after pressing the reset button and moving the throttle to full ahead and full reverse it stops whining at neutral.  Unfortunately the whine starts when going forward or reverse and is a most annoying faulty design.

I had a Vantec ESC, that would create that noise, but when I checked, it was
the motors making the noise, not the ESC... Most ESC are solid state, nothing to vibrate.
Place your ESC outside the boat, and see where the noise is coming from..

Hi bj,
I would suggest that you go through the set up procedure with the Radio and ESC again but make sure that the trims are set to central positions.
After you have set the units up again. Switch everything off and then switch all back on again. This will make sure that it is not the radio or ESC. Some motors will whine due to their construction and price. As somebody has suggested separate the Motors from the ESC so that you can listen to either. If it is the motors -change them or put up with the whine. If Radio, either change radio (its the frequency modulation) or put up with it.
I have been a boat modeller for over 55 years and have had this problem myself. The most common reason has been to buy and install cheap motors when at shows, we all like a bargain. Always buy the best quality motors that you can afford, don't spend £1000 on the boat and spend a fiver on the motors!
Good luck I hope you find happiness with your model.
Regards
Graham

And there is this...

Quote
Regardless of the type used, an ESC interprets control information not as mechanical motion as would be the case of a servo, but rather in a way that varies the switching rate of a network of field effect transistors, or FETs.[1] The rapid switching of the transistors is what causes the motor itself to emit its characteristic high-pitched whine, especially noticeable at lower speeds.

Some controllers push the switching frequency very high e.g. 16-20khz, which is difficult for most people to hear as most peoples hearing tails off at about 15khz. Higher frequency switching does heat the transistors more though I believe.

Older ESC's based on analogue switched at the frequency of the radio system which would usually be 50hz, again inaudible although motors would tend to 'growl' slightly at lower speeds.
