10m class fishing boats
« on: July 13, 2007, 09:12:05 am »

just been looking through this months marine modelling international ,mainly the article on 10m class fishing boats .I am in the process of building a cygnus gm33 and quite fancy cluttering the decks up ,the rigging not a prob but where can i get the nets from to go around the net drum .
And how do the trawl, otter boards work ,are they a guide for the net or the boat during drifting ??.

the nets you may be able to source easily....

i was put onto this by a fellow modeller at a show some many years ago...

find a good ' old style' chemists- and ask for  old ladies hair nets !

some are perfect in style for fisihing nets...

This is an old description of how a trawl is worked

Altho since the 1940's the boat have worked extra lengths of wire between the net and the otter doors to catch more fish ( called sweeps ) , If you look through the under 9.9m fishing boat catagory on the trawlerphotos site ( link below this in my signature ) you will be able to see plenty of examples of trawlers and what they have on the deck.

you guy's never fail to suprise me ,it's only when you look at the problem from a distance the ideas come rolling in .
Your soloutions to my problem are great and after talking to my local model shop proprietor ,he came up with a similar idea ,fruit net's ,the ones for oranges ,
also carrot net's  .
so it will be a trip to my local Boyes for the mesh netting and the green grocer for the orange and carrot net's,why not as the ones on the real boats are of diferent colors.
Thanks for the description of what otter boards do  cheers Dave.

Right then lads here she is ,thats my version of a 10m fishing boat .The hull ,deck, wheel house and roof (kit) is from Andy at models by design minus the teak capping ,dam stuff is just too fiddly and wouldn't look right on a working boat so it was on with the trusty microphone cable .
She has not had a propper water test yet so fingers crossed a dip is on the cards tomorrow .
Still lots more to do like lights and fenders n stuff ,but i wont make it too posh .

The Teak flat piece ontop of the rails is fitted to these boats in real life lol.

Its only the smallest boats that use the rounded rubber now as most use wood.
