Another lesson learned
« on: August 24, 2014, 02:23:56 pm »

If we don't make mistakes we don't learn we are told, but how many times do we have to make the same mistake to learn the lesson ?

Stanley knife blades, wonderful tools but I've just learned again that they are sharp  and in the hands of a fool damn dangerous.

Be careful with them gentlemen, especially if the medical pros have put you on blood thinning drugs !

Hey Rob

I hope the result of your run in with a stanley knife was not too painful or damaging.

All the best

I was 22 years a woodwork teacher..............and still I draw blood every model I make{-) {-)

just one of those things.....................it's when you draw blood  so badly that you have to go to A & E to be stitched up, trying to cut a black pudding in half that you have to worry, lol....

been there done that.....got the scar %% %% %% %%

It's like when you slice a finger with a craft knife and a split second later, with said finger in mouth, think I knew I was going to do that, %%

Yes Jon, it does hurt. It was the result of scraping the blade along the inside of a plasticard capping rail to smooth it.
And yes radiojoe, I'd just thought to myself ' carefully you idiot, that slips and it will cut that spare finger'
We live and ( sometimes) learn.

Think positive . . . . . . . At least I've stopped the bleeding now.

Ah - ow - at least it was a spare finger. been there done that, dropped a scalpel once, it just brushed my leg on the way down. picked it up and it was 20 minutes later that I noticed my sock was soaked with blood.

I have been learning the same lesson too many times!
Holding the steel rule on the line and cutting with a Stanley knife.
The lesson is to keep my thumb and fingers behind the knife at all times - the knife
always slips at some point and I've been cut badly many times- just couldn't keep concentrating
for long enough.
No more!

Oh yes! Definitely done that! Trouble is, I have neuropathy, one of the symptoms being the lack of feeling in the extremities - it was  quite a while until I realised the scalpel was missing… A while longer to connect that to the squelchy feeling in my shoe.

My wife keeps prodigious amounts of patching up supplies 'in stock' plasters, steripads, micropore tape…

Though I can confirm the truism that you only cut yourself with a blunt blade.

I do find I'm getting clumsier, presumably with age. I'll go to do something and miss, or pick something up and fumble it - nothing dreadful (so far) but it happens much more often than say 10 years ago. I can even turn round and smack my face on a door-frame - never used to be able to do that.

So I try not to multi-task. Eg if I'm getting a mug out of the cupboard I try to get it out, put it down (not necessarily let go of it), close the door, lift the mug, turn round, etc. A bit like a robot.

Same with sharps on the bench. I try to actually think about each action and keep them separate. Try to be fluid or impressive ... uh, oh! It's only me in there, so no point in trying to impress anyone else with my lack of swordsmanship.

Lesson 12a. Never lift your hand to remove your glasses with the knife in your hand. Eyes escaped, but my wife was rather faint when she saw the knife hanging from my forehead.

lesson 12b, never lightly run your hand along a piece of rough sawn timber, I had to go to the doctors surgery to get the 6" splinter out of the palm of my hand, it had gone in 1 1/2" into that fleshy part by the thumb.

You slip and accidentally break a live power socket with a steel toecap; the electric shock throws you backwards and the back of your head hits a bench, which tips the hard-hat sharply forward, smashing your goggles and breaking your nose. Ta-dah!

Slightly off track, but I learned the hard way not to forget to wash your hands after using Deep Heat cream on my knees, then going to the loo for a pee. That made my eyes water for an hour or more.... <:(

My ''gentleman's area'' has had some hammer recently...

Whilst out on the back lawns flying my Chinook, something caught my eye and I lost concentration for a millisecond...before I had time to react, the heli had changed direction and flew backwards, straight into the above mentioned ''gentleman's area''.

All those blades revolving at gawd knows how many revs per minute nearly made a woman out of me...   <:(

Knowing my luck recently, if I did stay in bed, I'd probably fall out...   :embarrassed:

Heck. With the number of people who die in bed it has to be about THE most dangerous place to hang around ...
