I have a scratch built MTB 3ft. long from a Vic Smeed design. I will power it with a Robbe 700/13T motor. to this end I have 2x 6v 3300 batteries in series for the 12v I require. I shall be connecting them to a Viper 40 speed controller.My questions are; when all set up what do I do with the small leads on the batteries which would connect to the Rx? I take it I shall have to use a separate Rx. battery supply as the 12v from the motor supply would be too much. It states in the Viper instructions that the red wire from the ESC should be disconnected when an external battery is used, is this the red wire between the orange and brown?

You DO NOT need a separate batt pack to power up the receiver .you use the  one form the esc,which gets plugged into the throttle channel......Blue and yellow leads on the esc are Motor connections...the red and black go to the
batts....Obviously the rudder goes to the esc
 
Thats all you need to do

As Dave says you do not need a separate battery for the receiver as the ESC has a battery eliminator circuit (BEC) which will provide the correct voltage and current from the drive battery. However, you are correct in that should you want to use a separate battery you need to disconnect the red wire on the receiver lead from the ESC. The receiver will run on 4-6 volts if you want a separate battery.

To clarify things -
There are just two connections to make to the receiver:
1. The three-wire lead with a black plug from the speed controller fits into the receiver's Throttle channel. Don't remove any wires from the plug; and
2. The three-wire lead with a black plug from the steering (rudder) servo plugs into the receiver's Steering channel.
As Mr Jones and Dougal say, with this particular brand of speed controller you do not require a separate battery to power the receiver, so do not plug anything into the receiver's "Batt" socket. The thick-wire connections to the speed controller are as Dave describes.

Yes the rudder should go to the receiver my mistake and YES you can simply Ignore the small leads that are on the batt
