Very nice Sandy, looks good on the water. Hope that isn't the dreaded blue green algae I see in a couple of the shots?

It is... so bad was it that, despite the pictures, it was very windy and a boat sank.

Tom got out the rubber dinghy but the water was so bad it just wasn't located.

You can't see more than two or three inches down into the water.

Nice model.

Is it a Revell Flower Class with a massive re-working? It's very difficult to guess the scale.

Gorgeous vessel and an interesting name as well! I hope the algae problem is fixed soon.

It is a 48th scale very long fo'c'sle HMS Bryony (from Fleetscale I think) that had to be reworked to a short fo'c'sle version.

Worked from the photo of Gloxinia from early 1943:-

Uses a small brushless motor (outrunner) and a 6v SLA battery. All works fine as long as you cruise about sedately. Go full chat and the low voltage cut out cuts in and kills the speed controller so it is either a wait-the-drift or break out the waders time. I read the article in MB magazine about why don't scale boaters use brushless and gave it a go. Works fine. At slow speed you can count the blades turning on the prop.

An in progress shot:-

Nice size model but takes quite a bit of ballasting... two 6v SLA's and four sheets of lead.

Ooh, lovely crisp styrene work Sandy, she's looking good. The proportions of the hull and sheer look spot on.

I found that the Flowers, like trawlers, sit very stern low, in other words a lot more draft aft than forward.

I built the stand so that the waterline was level and so sitting on the stand is how the model sits in the water.

But, the Flowers were obviously built on a slipway and as such the verticals; bridge, casing end are all at 90 degrees to the keel.

This means, and it becomes obvious when you look at pictures of Flowers, especially short fo'c'sle ones, that the bridge leans backwards and, despite the stern sheer, the end of the boiler casing does too.

I didn't take many pictures during construction but the ones I did may be of use to someone:-

Bilge keels

Undercoat

Deck bracing and bilge keel attachment - short brass pins drilled into styrene keels. No expense spared workbench also.

I added the extra portholes.

Lovely workshop as well as the corvette! I like the hatches very much with all the latch details etc.

Do you blend glues in the mixer? I under stand the need for a cooker to heat pies in, but I think you could have matched the baseboard to the kitchen :O)

Hi,

I have some drawings of Aubretia, but none of Gloxinia.

The Aubretia drawings gave me a guide for the plan of the bridge but after that, and in fact for most of it, I worked from the photo.

Not sure of that is very helpful for you?

Hi Sandy,

Great job you've done on her  :-))

Your scratch build work looks superb, what a shame there is not more work in progress pics. Is that a 4" gun where the 2pdr is normally sited?

Looks magnificent on the water

Hi,

Yes, It is an HA 4inch and the 2dr got moved aft.

Some sources now say it was a 3inch, but original information says it was the 4inch.

The four first Med Flowers all ended up rather unique looking.

It was a nice build, and sails well.

Now working on a 24th scale Fairmile B.

Not sure why I didn't take many photos, as I took hundreds on my (first) Guepratte build...and I have ended up taking even less of the B.  {:-{

Sandy

Just picked up on these pictures of your wonderful BIG flower class. She looks great, and even better in real life on the water.
Misplaced my password for Model Boat Mayhem, so have not been following things or making comments recently, however I'm up and running again so thinking of posting my next on line build here.
See you at the pond side when the weather warms up a bit.

Off topic, Kev (longshanks) asked for some pictures of the Fairmile B.

It's been a slow build, but progress as of yesterday:-

Another excellent build coming out of the kitchen. I shall certainly look forward to seeing this one "beating it" across the lake.

More pictures please.
