A quick update to say that I have coated the plug in blue tinted PVA ready for plating and have made a master port. I will cast these and let them into holes made in the plating.

Pictures to follow once batteries have been sourced.

HMS Rupert now resplendant in a barrier coat of blue emulsion and PVA. This will allow me to use celulose based glues and dope etc without the foam underneath dissolving into a icky mass unlike a ship.

The waterline and Armoured belt has been marked in. I do not know if she was copper sheathed, but the hull will be plated as requested by Deans marine.

Despite what the pictures show, the cut ins are symetrical. I think it is an optical illusion, honest!

Well, I spoke to Ron at the Shepton show about the plating procedure and his description was a lot easier to do than I had expected, but the hull plug needs some smoothing in places so that any dips and raised areas do not show through the plate detail.

The Copper sheathing applied to ships of this period (up to the early twentieth century in fact due to the lack of a decent anti fouling paint) is flush plated and not overlapping as I assumed, so again this will make life easier.

But, I felt I wanted to express something along to get sailing and so concentrated on my HMS Ready for a while until a wargames terrain project loomed, and so both are currently in abeyance until later in July.

I will get back on the job soon.

As regards the copper sheathing this was not attached to the iron hull directly as this creates a battery with the salt water and all sorts of corrosion. What they typically did was to plank the hull outside with wood and then copper plate over the wood so there was ofter a ridge on the outside of the hull where the wood/copper joined the hull. As you surmised the copper plating was edge to edge to keep the bottom smooth.

Look forward to the next upodate

To make matters more interesting, the sheathing covers the lower section pof the armoured belt as well! So I will have a double belt effect just above the waterline.

I did a little carving today, but did not get very far and went home:O)

Thanks for the advice and good wishes, I will endevour to repay them the week after next.

The beauty of having all these layers is that if you're planning splitting the model at or near the waterline you can have a natural overlap somewhere to camouflage the join.

Rupert looks to have a great future Ian :-))

Just as a reminder, armoured belts were typically flush with the hull on many ships as they sat on a inwards shelf to support their weight. Usually armour was visible by its smooth outer surface with no rivets as they were fixed to the hull side with short bolts from the inside. Also thick armour was also put on top of about 4" of teak planking. The planking acted as a kind of shock absorber and prevented spalling behind the belt armour.

It varied from ship to ship but certainly this was typical with battleshios and armoured crusiers.

Enjoy!

Ok thanks Geoff. I am a bit dissapointed that the belt will not be visible but I am trying to make a relatively accurate model so will not make the belt obvious. This also makes plating easier:O)

Thanks for the information geoff

Just a little update on HMS Rupert.

I have carves back the chunky areas behind the propellor shaft housings and covered the areas in Epoxy resin.

A quick update on progress with photos to follow when something interesting occurs.

I am slapping on lots of filler around the propellor shaft entry points to match them up and fair them into the hull better. Isn't new cellulose filler lovely to work with:O)

Then a layer or two of GRP tissue before some plating.

Always amazes me how chunky the prop shafts were on the old battleships, makes it a proper challenge making both sides symmetrical. Look forward to your piccies! :-))

I don't think they will quite be exact, but should still look good.
