Ian,
Spent a few years over the bridge in Pembroke Dock.
Used to dock at the ammo depot and walk over the hill to Milford?
Is the pub by the old fish dock still there?

Bob

The pub right outside the main gate to the docks was the Globe.
My Uncle and Aunt, Albert nd Evie ran it for years.

I filled my car up yesterday. £114!
My car had it's tax due for this month, another £500 gone
I'm curious to know just what sort of car has a fuel tank this big (20 gallons?) and costs £500 a year to tax (Band M)? We must be into Hummer or old Cadillac territory.....

Can't be old Yank stuff, that'd qualify for free road tax as a classic car...wouldn't it? And that must be a mighty big fuel tank...come on chap, give us the details!

Yep my tank is about that size 93 litres (BMW X5 4.4l), luckily old enough to be on the lower tax rate £280 I think. I can remember when petrol was 3/9 a gallon, in new money that is around 4.2 pence a litre, But But I think my take home pay then might have been nearly £4.00 a week. Mighty glad that I stayed with the RAF for 37 years for quite a nice pension, certainly wouldn't be running the X5 without it.

It's getting frightening, this thread...3/9 a gallon? I wish...I'd have grabbed that Challenger with both hands if it were like that today.

Oh well...

You mean grass like this Stavros?  :}

Yes it's my beloved Land Rover Discovery. 7 Seats and can carry a weeks worth of stuff plus 3 good sized model boats in comfort. It's also got a fridge under the arm rest.
She does see plenty of off roading though. Every few weeks I go with some friends and get her muddy. Also planning a trip next March to Morocco to have some fun in the sand dunes.

In 1966 petrol was around 2/- per gallon and a whole gallon lasted a week in my Honda 50 super sports - with full racing fairing. I was also saving hard for a Triumph 350 tiger which cost on the road taxed £304. I never got the bike BTW Mother was horrified at the prospect and I was slowly diverted away...

Do all your shopping at Tesco or Morrisons. Save up your points and get the petrol cheaper.

I filled my car up yesterday. £114! thankfully I had enough points on the old clubcard to bring it down by 12p a litre which does help soften the blow a bit.

There's only one way of looking at it, the price of petrol makes everything else in motoring seem cheap. For most cars you can get a new Tyre fitted and balanced for less than the cost of a tank of fuel now. You need messed up logic like that to be able to justify it sometimes!

My car had it's tax due for this month, another £500 gone, and I collected it from the garage yesterday after having the suspension arms replaced and a 4 wheel alignment £1166 lighter.

Motoring isn't cheap anymore - but then again, nothing is!

Jon.........a slight exaggeration on the cheapness in '66 I'm afraid matey............I started "officially" motorcycling in 1967 and on June 3rd 1967 I bought my first gallon of 2 stroke for my BSA bantam, and it cost me 6s 8d......(still got the receipt somewhere.............I'll collect anything, lol)the exact same price as a single vinyl record (and my first of that era was Arnold Lane, PF).................and I know some mates had started riding 7 months earlier in '66.......and if I wanted to go out on pillion it was I that footed the bill.......and petrol for my mates Thunderbird cost my 5s 9d a gallon....

I didn't know you'd started riding in the 50's.........you don't look that old, {-) {-) {-)

On checking perhaps so but it was certainly less that five bob, about 4/6 probably; that soon changed though after the socialists made their mark.
