As the proprietor of a small business that makes their product as well as all the other jobs that small businesses require, I was pleased to read the pleasant and balanced narrative of the gentleman's experiences.

I presume that Simon is a one man business and so has to do pattern making as well as wax casting, setting , mould making and all the processes that go into making premiere quality propellers, therefore he will have stocks of standard sizes and types that will be delivered quickly, and the special orders and commissions that will take longer to deliver.

The issue of success in such fields is that reputation is built on the work of the individual, and trying to afford, let alone train someone else to be a clone of you is very difficult especially if you get through several feckless people, with all the employment laws etc that makes taking someone on complex and time consuming. Therefore, the individual craftsman plugs on and will have a large backlog.

If you need to contact a company, be nice, be succinct and don't tell them your life story. We all like a natter, but for every second we are talking, it takes a second longer to get to your order! Once we get back to shows, have a natter there in a more relaxed setting.

Like most suppliers of hobby items Covid 19 has generated a surge in hobbies. The knock on effect means suppliers are now facing a backlog of orders.

I accept the worlds a different place than it was, i'm trying to take delivery of a brand new 345m long cruise ship with a hugely international crew, getting supplies to finish it off / fix all our problems is "interesting"

A simple reply making sure the order hadn't been forgotten about / fallen through the cracks was all I was after.

I can never understand the codes looking for a four blade kort 95mm as the kort nozzle is 100mm ID think 98mm might be to big  is it a mill or 2mill you should leave.

Just out of interest what size prop did you go for? I ordered a 90mm but have had to send it back and have it altered to 85mm.

Has anyone heard from Propshop recently?

Still haven't received my order from November 19th or had a response to any email / comment on the website ive left Maybe 5 now?

Will try and call when i get back to Bremerhaven after conclusion of sea trials... Don't really see how in the last 4 months he couldn't have found the time to send me a simple email explaining the situation regarding my props...

Hi Likeomg, a bit of detective work suggested Odyssey of the Seas as the ship in question.  The registered tonnage is 169,000 Gross tons.  I just wonder what the actual displacement is?
Also is this a 'shaft' drive ship or does she have Azimuth pods?  Is there a move away from the azimuth system?  I heard one ship 'owner' say he would not have them again, feel free to put me right!

Always curious and regards.
(sorry a bit off topic)

Yes, im a navigation officer for Royal Caribbean, last ship was the Symphony OTS and now im here on Odyssey,

I don't have the exact number to hand at the moment (im 12-4 and just got into bed) but it's around 78k mark for OY, I can send you the pilot card if you'd like?

Royal are pretty dedicated to Podded propulsion, yes the bearings can be delicate - SY and HM are going to dry dock as we speak to replace the bearings but on ships this big, traditional shaft line doesn't work.

Take NCL Epic / Ugly - she's pretty big, shaft line and has to take tug boats when the wind is more than 25kts. Symphony one arrival in St Kitts, we committed and wind increased from 37kts to 45-50 whilst mid docking.. we made it but that was the absolute limit. no way a conventional ship would of had a chance.

For me, pods everyday. I spent 2.5 years on a conventional cruise ship (vision) and while it was enjoyable these pods are something else... my dad is also a Ch engineer in the company who moved shoreside so I have a good understanding of the engineering going on in a pod.

I have some pics of the pods for the upcoming Disney cruises line ship that's also being built in Papenburg right now if you'd like? ours were already installed by the time I arrived to the yard.

Feel free to send me a PM not to litter this topic, or I can create a thread somewhere where I document my 'new build' adventures, we also watched Abramovich's new yacht Solaris proceed out to Sea trials today. have a few pics of that...

Really interesting you can stay off topic all day long with this stuff and it's your thread  O0

As an apprentice I served my time with a boy called Graham Barker. After we qualified as electricians he moved on into computers and IT. decades later I find he moved to Florida and works at high level with cruise ships and their communications and control systems . I would not be surprised if you know or have read his name somewhere,.

Prop Shop - contact details?
« Reply #194 on: April 26, 2021, 10:18:27 am »

I am having no luck in contacting Prop Shop

Are they still trading ?

Their web site says they are not taking on line orders, their contact form does not work if you put in a prop reference (says its gibberish and will not send) landline phone - not answered and no facility to leave a message. Mobile No. not answered

Thanks Clive

So is everyone else. Funnily enough I've just seen the same conversation on Facebook, one of our club guys bought a prop from him last July and despite being very nicely made, it took 6 months to arrive.  Never answered emails either.

Sadly, as is often the case, a popular and well loved trader is also a very very busy trader especially if their trade is quite specialist.

I expect that Simon is rushed off his feet, and wants to get as much work out the door and in the post as possible.

I expect he would also love to hire someone to share the workload, but finding someone who can be trained to do foundry work and professional finishing for a wage that doesn't scupper the business will be hard. Likewise, designing patterns is also not something you can leave in the hands of a novice  {:-{

I note that everyone who has brought this situation up on the forum has been patient and measured in their tone. This is a lovely thing to read, as being disagreeable with such a trader, and then having them throw in the towel because of bad feeling would be disastrous for the hobby.

Many can sell timbers and paints etc, only one or maybe two companies in the world make bespoke bronze props!
