HMS Rodney
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:10:33 am »

Greetings,

I thought I would share a few pictures of HMS Rodney.  Today was her shake down cruise.  While she needs some work with the Speed Controller, she sailed wonderfully.

Fleetscale hull and fittings.  Two direct drive 500 motors.

Best Regards,

Frank

Congratulations Frank...she certainly is very impressive  :-)) .......

The only difficulty I had was understanding which HMS Rodney she was..........the WIKI people show a number post the turn of the century....but I could not relate to the profile

What was her pennant number?......was she coal fired?.........

Your sailing water appears very calm & flat  O0...will she have more ballast to bring her waterline down?....... Derek

Look up Nelson class battleships built in 1921/22, Rodney is called by the Royal Navy the 'Bismarck Destroyer' as she decimated her in 1941 with her 3x triple 16" guns.

Indeed that is a gorgeous ship model Frank! She looks so stately. I hope you have loads of fun sailing her and that someone provides a Bismark you can bully with her!

With her 2048 pound shells, I can see where she got her nick name from 8) Reading on navweaps, these were light shells! I wonder what the heavy ones (had they been made) woulod have weighed?

Thank you for the kind words.

I have alway thought that the Nelson Class had a very special look.  Now I just have to finish my model of the Hood...

Superb pictures, superb model :-))  The last picture i like the best. I know this sounds funny but even the water looks right. The water looks 'to scale' as rougher water ( waves, ripples etc ) sometimes gives away the fact that you are looking at a model. You obviously in the real world can't make ' scale ' water,  or could you?..................by diluting it with water {-)  Regards, Dave.

Frank,

excellent model of HMS RODNEY, and Fleetscale have been accurate with the hull shape.

I too have a 1:72 scale RODNEY (111") and she is scratchbuilt.

Can you tell us what scale she is please?

Your model looks to be in 1927 trim by the way.

Sandy.

Hello,

The scale is 1/128.  I have the Hood hull, and both impressed me.

I was trying to get a look from the early 30's, but I'm not sure how close I got.  I have the "Man o War" book on the class.  However, there were so many changes to the way the ships were trimmed, it was hard to be true to a particular year.

Frank

Derek, in answer to your first question, RODNEY never had a pennant number but her callsign was Golf Mike Alpha Papa.

Second question: certainly coal fired with eight boilers.

Nelson and Rodney were oil fired not coal fired; the last major purely coal fired vessel built for the RN was HMS Tiger.

Frank,

on reflection your model of RODNEY could be anywhere between 1929 and 1937. The clue is in the two eight-barrel Pom poms and their sponsons either side (and slightly forward of) the funnel.

Another clue is the "alcove" on the starboard side of the main superstructure, an unexplained feature of RODNEY only.

Great workmanship and and a credit to you for deciding to build what was generally known throughout the RN as "RODNOL", a derogatory term for a battleship that, after the Washington Treaty truncated her length, resembled the silhouette of RN Oilers with their names ending in "ol".

Somebody has got to love the NELSON twins, and thankfully there's at least two of us about. O0

My RODNEY is depicted in her October 1942 livery, that being the month and year of my birth and five months after the BISMARCK action.

With your permission, and if you want, I could attach an image of her on this thread.

Kind regards,

Sandy.

Liverbudgie, many thanks for that correction, I was mixing my coals; FFO's and Diesel fuels. I obviously missed-out my FFO (Furnace Fuel Oil) and God knows why, I had enough FFO fired ships ...................  :embarrassed: %)

I like unique, so the Nelson class was an obvious choice for me.

Please post a photo of your Rodney.  Looking back at your thread, your refit was one of my inspirations.

Another one here.  :-))

I used Myhobbystore plan, MM603 enlarged from 35.5to 48 inch, as a basis for my model built about 28 years ago. Started off as a simple model, as per the plan,  but after building the hull I went a bit mad and added more and more detail, scaling up the main parts from a Tamiya 1/700 plastic model.

Most of the detail was worked out, and sized, from photo's of the builders model which I came across in a museum plus books, and are not claimed to be 100% accurate, especially the lower hull which is missing bilge keels, A frames etc.  The old saying, if it looks right, it is right.  Fitted with two 385 motors.

Never did get around to fitting all the boats and davits.  I based my model on Rodney as built, painted pale grey.  This has taken on a yellow tinge now. Varnish overcoat gone off.  <:(   Another one of my models which just sits on the shelf now.

A few photo's, (could be better), taken through perspex. Can't find any of the complete model just now.

None too charitably I expect!

While slow and ungainly, the Nelsons packed serious punch and bested the worst the Germans could throw at Rodney. Ok, Bismark was slowed and crippled, but those eight guns were still dangerous and directed at least for a few minutes before the directors and a turret were silenced.

Ooh, I fancy doing a Capital ship but must control myself!
