Modelissimo kit of HMS Victory
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:53:29 am »

My local auction house has a boxed, unmade kit of HMS Victory by Modelissimo of Italy for auction. Length is 1035mm and Height is 715mm so it's a fair size. Does anybody have any knowledge/experience of this kit manufacturer?

I think you will find that is a Corel kit. Name being bottom right on the label. Very good kits.

Thanks for the info, as posted it's for sale at an auction so worth a punt.

Corel kits are OK, but need some work to catch up to the competition eg Victory models.
Frames are CNC routed, but require a fair bit of work to make parts fit. Metal parts are very hard and brittle - difficult to get to conform to the curves etc on your model.
Timber decorations are pressed from sawdust/mdf type material. Timber quality is good - a lot of it will be 1 and 2mm walnut, which can be more difficult to bend and shape.
Plans - good.
Instructions - could be improved. If you have built a period ship before, they are OK. If not, then a good modelling book will be helpful.

I have completed  their Endeavour, and have the Victory kit - been sitting on the back burner for a few years while I work out how to make the decorations fit my model.
Would I buy again? Only if the subject is not available from other manufacturers.

Few kits of this type are very accurate, however this kit makes the basis of a fine model. I used it as a basis for my victory at Portsmouth model, back in the 1980's. If you can adapt the model it is well worth a bid.
It is a model for the long haul though. Mine took over three years to complete.

Nah, bidding started at £80 and it sold for £130. Pretty cheap really considering the retail at the moment is £317 but too steep for me plus I've already got 2 boats on the stocks.
