Nav lights.
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:00:40 pm »

Or more specifically the stern light.

This is specified as being white and viewable over an arc of 135 degrees as seen from the stern and as close to the stern as practicable, so far so good.

However what is the situation when it comes to anchor handlers? It can't be mounted on the centreline at the stern, so would it be offset to either the port or starboard or would it be mounted on the rearmost face of the superstructure?

Also the few photo's that I have seen of ahts' at night you can't see a stern light, but what you can see is a fully illuminated work deck with floodlights shining down from the superstructure. What is the position when this occurs, ie general lighting overpowers navigation lights?

Its generally not at the stern, but up by the accommodation as near aft on t4he centre line as they can get it.

That's where I thought it would be, but is the thinking here that, because the stern/work deck is lit up like a xmas tree all the time, it doesn't really matter? After all if a following craft can't see a ship lit like this then they certainly are not going to see a single stern light.

Hello

Off course the stern light is not really visible when the AHTS is working with the work deck illuminated like a football field. But when the ship is sailing, all flood lights are off and the stern light is "working well"

Here the stern nav light is on the rear face of the superstuctures

Xtian your photo's show exactly what I meant!

It's up on the superstructure and even from the nearness of the camera location it is barely visible (yes its daylight but!) compared to the decklights that are shining down.

Thanks for the photo's and for clearing it up.  :-))

...and the tug has dual lights, so, if one burns out, it's just a simple matter of flipping a switch. This is much better than changing a bulb underway at night, and infinitely better than going aloft at night to change the masthead bulb - been there, done that! >:-o

Yep Madscientist since years now, it's mandatory for all large boats and ships to have redundant nav light systems :  normal and spare
