Blue Star Line - Hull Colours
« on: November 04, 2014, 04:14:24 pm »

Hi all,

Despite having spent many years floating around on them, now I come to build my 1/96 Afric Star class reefer, I can't remember exactly what the grey/green (violet green on the plans) hull colour actually looked like. I'm sure as a cadet I must have slapped gallons of it on whilst hanging from a stage or bosun's chair!

Can anyone with a sharper memory point me in the direction of identifying a suitable equivalent I could use?

Thanks

To me in old Airfix colours that looks like number 95 concrete and looks like french blue.

Thanks for the help so far gents. Frank, nice looking model you have there!
I recall the hull being a bit more green/cream than grey, managed to find a similar colour from Tamiya deck tan, although a test patch is still a little dark I think, and would be a damn expensive way to buy paint!

I half am and half not looking forward to all those cranes. The plans are quite general so think it will be a test piece then knock out another 6. Will probably have to redo the funnel too, wrapped some styrene sheet around a frame, but got a little twisted, might have to be the block of balsa method!

Wrapping very thin ply around a frame normally produces good results. Usually a balsa former at the bottom and another just below the top of the funnel connected by a vertical separator will do the trick.

Halfords spray-can "Ford Electric/Monza Blue" might be close to Frank`s hull colour.

Frank,
coming back to these, did you scratch the lifboats yourself?

Cheers
