Tosher Tug SILVERVERDOT
« on: November 05, 2014, 12:37:59 am »

Hallo all, I am posting pictures of a model that is already done, unfortunately the image sizes of complete build pics are too large to post here so these are low density recent pictures.

The full build can be found here:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2204035

Here is the story:

This is a scratch build of a 1939 Jubilee Class Thames River Tugboat.

"Silverdot" was built by James Pollock Ltd., Faversham. YN1737, United Kingdom in 1939.

One of 14 Jubilee Class Tugs built between 1934 and 1941, these tough littleTugs moved barges, ships and all manner of floating trade during the pre-war years.

Intended for canal use, these “Tosher” tugs were designed with a low profile to make it possible to pass under the many low bridges in the huge labyrinth of canals in England, many of which were constructed by the Romans during their occupation.

Several of these old Tugs are still used today ~ built to last, they are well suited to retrofit.

We have only two pictures of this subject, a black and white taken during the 40’s and a color image as she sits dry and renamed “Tucit”, waiting for high tide and resumed labor.

Not having plans, information from several of her sisters will be used to build this model.

Ready for a transformation / updgrade, a Mountfleet Models "River Queen" built in the U.K. in the 80's was sourced for this build, the scale and shape are just right.

The original model has been well retired, repurposed as a real boat would be …..

"SILVERDOT Built 1939 by James Pollock Ltd., Faversham. YN1737. L40'. B4.7'. D4.7'. 100bhp Crossley diesel engine. ON167237.
3-1939 Launched. 4-1939 Delivered to Silvertown Services Ltd., London. 1957 Still owned."

It's possible I may only be allowed to post a few at a time so I will make several separate postings ...

A few more ....

As may be seen, this model comes apart for service reasons, the rear steerage access cover comes off as does the towing deck / tool storage well,

The pilot's station and cabin come away as well, all fit Quite tight enough to prevent the Cruel Sea from entering the model........

Superb model, takes me back to my youth working on the river, remember those tosher tugs well lugging lighters up and down the Thames with their canvass dodger screens to protect the skipper at the wheel.

Thanks very much everyone, I wanted to honor the people who built this type of craft and the hardy sort what worked them in all types of weather ( likely because Mum put them off to work or else ! )...

Hopefully a maiden voyage this weekend, hope this site can accommodate a Youtube video.

Evening Gents, we had fine weather here today for the Seat Trials of this little Tosher Tug.

This one is about done, made it to the water today for Sea Trials ~

Went well as could be, no leaks, responds well to commands, no sound at all but the faint whine of the ESC.

The Pilot came out OK;  the scale is as close as could be obtained ( the "Pilot" was found at a local toy store that has big bins full of action figures ).

The final touches were the running lights and the tow rope and a few more objects in the tool well.

Now, on to the next project ..........
