U.S.S. GEARING Build
« on: November 10, 2014, 12:04:05 am »

Hello Folks,
I'm the old Coot who built the static model of an English Frigate over in the sailing ships section of the forum.  A dear friend of mine has asked me to build him a model of the WW2 static model of the U.S.S. Gearing.  Destroyer DD-710.  I am bulding from a BlueJacket kit at 1/16"=1' scale.  Nicely detail model, will display at 24-7/16" over-all length.  I'll launch this post and then load a couple of pictures to see if everything is working.  At this point of the build, the hull is faired and skeg attached.
Regards,
Dennis Lancaster

Roger that and tks Ray.  Its good to be back into winter mode, after completing a 15ft rowing/sailing skiff which I completed and launched 1 month ago.  Just can't stop building.

This will be a first for me, as I have never built a Destroyer before.  BlueJacket makes a nice kit, but you had better be smart about fittings and terminology.  I may need some assistance from you dear folks as we go along.  I welcome critique and if I go astray, please let me know.

Fairwinds,

Dennis

Well, I figured that a brief kit review might be in order to start things off.  The kit was purchased from BlueJackets Shipcrafters here in the U.S.  Very typical of the top quality and accuracy of the kits found at BlueJackets, I have never found them to be a bad experience.  The Gearing has been well researched by Al Ross and the accuracy of the model can be trusted built straight from the kit as carefully as possible.  The scale means parts are very small, so a good degree of modeling skill is required, plus a steady hand.  The kit contains the following: machine carved basswood hull, Laser-cut wood parts, Britannia metal fittings (take note, that these metal fittings are not numbered, so a CD with 104 close up pictures of each part and assembly is labled and provided), Cast resin parts, Photoetched brass details (ladders, railing, etc.), 4 sheets of full size plans, very complete instruction manual with pictures.
I will post pictures for clarity separately,
Dennis

Wow John, I bow to the master... beautiful work and thank you so much for the link.  Already, I can see help for me in the detail shots you have provided.  Is your version of the Gearing the FRAM1 update?  Reason I ask is that your waterline hull paint schem reflects the FRAM1 verson.  The scale I am working at is really small and it will be a challenge to get clean detail for a crisp look.

The Gearing I built " for sale " is the 1945 version . I did build before this a FRAM  1 version for a US client but the topside is totally different, with funnel caps and asroc etc

I like to read all the builds and especially like to see ressurected builds from a year or so back as it shows that the modeller is back on track, sometimes having suffered illness, or other 'stuff' has abducted his or her spare time. They also show useful ideas for presenting ones own builds.

When you say 'Machine carved Hull' is it from a solid baulk or from parts fitted together and carved from that point?

Most interesting!

The solid hull is made up of 3 layers of wood glued, that is machine cut.. probably with a computer controlled milling machine would be my guess.  This is typical of many of Bluejackets kits, although some are plank on bulkhead or frame.  The accuracy of the milling is actually quite good as minimal fairing to station templet is required.  Mostly at the bow and stern where attachment to machine is done.  Hope you enjoy the build as I am.

Stbd prop shaft and struts installed.  Bilge keels installed.  Hose pipes installed. Rudders cut and faired out and location holes in.  Sonar case cut and faired... will hold back on attaching as it protrudes out on the bottom of the keel forward.  I remember that when I was in the Navy stationed at Midway Island, a Navy destroyer came into the lagoon and hit that sonar case on the reef... knocked that baby out of commission and they had to make tracks back to Hawaii for repairs.. darn thing really hangs down there.
I'm finding this build to be slow and tedious, but I enjoy it.  Britannia fittings and many and "small" and time consuming to identify and locate in the bags when are not marked.  That is what all the pictures are for and plans of course.  Oh well, moving on.

Thank you sir, bass wood is like that.  I chose solid hull construction to help speed up the build, as I want to be done by Spring.  The real fun will begin with the superstructure and all that detail... course you gentlemen know about that.  Both prop shafts are in place now, some final fairing on the hull, then will paint on some primer and get color going before mounting the hull to a base.

Color is starting to go on the hull at this point.  The final coat of bottom paint (Red Oxide) went on today and the first coat of main deck (dark Navy Blue) went down.  Tomorrow, I'll pull tape and remask for the waterline (black).
Cheers,

She is starting to look sleek now. I like your Popeye and Oliveoyl statue, I remember the cartoons from quite a while back now!

Popeye lamp loaned from a friend... I love it!  Brings back so many memories... all good ones.  Here are a couple more shots of screws and rudders and anchor added.
