Yes sir, wood for the lifts and then plastic card for facing and shields.  I've never worked with plastic card and I must say that I really like it.  Easy to shape with a #11 xacto blade, sanding and I use quick glue for adhesive.  I must say that this kit is wonderful and very precise... the limiter is "me" on detail accuracy.

regards,

Curved dodgers were shields.  Much needed as the kamakazi aircraft would aim for the ship and the object was to blast them out of the air, resulting in tons of shrapnel spraying the gunners.
5" cannon finished and mounted.  Working on 40mm cannon now.

I recall seeing the rain storm of spent bullets and shells falling into the ocean from the tonnes of ammo fired to keep the Divine Wind at bay on a documentary backawhile, astounding scenes!

Its 'Gearing' up to be a fine model Dan!

Sorry :}

Installation of the Mk37 Controller for 5"cannons, etc.  Controller is built up from many small etched brass pieces.. took hours actually.  I was amazed at the technology the Navy had in WW2 1944 on.... radar and computer (Analog) control along with manual stereo rangefinding.  What I was able to read from the internet stated that as much as 1000 rounds on those 5" cannons was required to down a Kamazii aircraft.  Can you even compare the sacrifice of a human life to a computer guided smart bomb of today?

Indoctrination is the name of the game. Birth someone into what was a marshall society, bring them up to beleive that you owe your life to a living god who might ask you to make the supreme sacrifice and you have a number of people who are willing to become the terminal guidance for a flying bomb.

Did you solder your radar array or use cyanoacrylate glue?

Fast glue, sorry to say.  I'm not that good and steady for welding.  However, I will be welding on some of the cannon shield tubs.. I have my iron at the ready and will give it a good try.

I read a few books on the subject of the "Divine Wind".... it is as you say sir.  Human guidance proved incredible accuracy to target. Our men in action did the best they could.

The build is proceeding a component at a time... assemble, paint and set aside for assembly at a later point.  Things are going to get pretty crowded and at that scale, my big fat hands get in the way.  My home made rigging tools will come in handy.

Aft Depth Charges assembled and temp placed where they will go.  Yet to paint.  Yikes!  Tiny pieces and no hair to pull out!

When used on the right detail, Etch is fab. Those Frames and the parts that KPnuts has used on his Warspite model are gorgeous.

Keep up the good work Dennis!

Yes, very happy with this kit.  Quality of parts are amazing.  Attached are detail shot of bridge and 40mm guns installed and laser cut assembly of tub rings... very delicate stuff.

The making of the 20mm gun splinter shield from brass flat stock and soldered at the seam.  First time for me doing metal work like that.  It will do I think.  Mount of shield will be done on the stern deck and 3 20mm guns will be contained within.

Some more pics of progress with the build.  Completed install of depth charges, forward stack and detail, railings started, etc.  much, much more to do.

Haw haw, coming along fine Mr Dennis! I like the pierced bulwarks alongside the bridge, they look quite like the apetures on medievil warships.

There is only one fitting that I had to solder, the rest is fast glue.  Speaking of fast, I am days away from finishing this build.  I'm currently doing the rigging and then that's it.  I'll do one more "once over" and then call my friend to pick her up.  I'll do a final set of pics for you all and then its "what will I build next"??
Cheers,
Dennis
