Rosetta Comet Landing
« on: November 12, 2014, 03:36:44 pm »

1534: by now it should have landed hope all is well.

This in many ways is worse than Apollo 11 and the moon landing at least it's not in the middle of the night  and I don't have to be in work in four hours time.

With that outlook on life we would all still be living in mud huts!

It makes a very pleasant change from the constant news about people chopping each other's heads off, the consequential costs of which make the money spent on Rosetta peanuts by comparison.

I remember staying up late with my young daughter to watch the Giotto mission 28 years ago - really stirred the imagination.

And it can inspire a new generation to take a path into science and engineering. Plus the pictures look pretty cool, too!

What about the wasted investment on Magellan, Columbus, and other "useless" voyages of discovery.
Who lent the Wright Bros money for flatting about on aeroplanes with no practical purpose?
Isaac Newton, Galileo, Marie Curie, Charles Darwin, etc, all spent a lot of time and funding on subjects of curiosity that eventually changed the world and our understanding of it.

Did you know that the Apollo cost was similar to what Americans spent on ice cream over the same period?
Wow !  Did that change technology in so many ways to all our advantage.

The cost is reckoned to be 3.5 euros per EU citizen spread over the period 1996-2014. One of the better projects funded by the EU I reckon :-))

It reminds me of a book I've just read called The Nano Flower by Peter F Hamilton which is set in approx 2060ish where they captured an asteroid and placed it in earth orbit to mine it for resources. It was called New London!

Basically what we've witnessed with the Rosetta is the beginning of this possibility.
